CONGRATULATIONS!!
EVERYONE HAS MADE IT TO THE END OF ANOTHER EVENTFUL YEAR
THANK YOU to all the parents who have shown their appreciation, not only to the teaching staff but to Admin staff over the year with your kind words and gifts of gratitude. This is always much appreciated. We wish you all a safe and wonderful holiday and look forward to seeing you all back on:
Monday 23 January 2023.
Class lists will be up for display in the Undercover Area on the first day of school. Please remember we ask that there is to be no photos taken of the class lists for privacy reasons.
Our Prep parents are invited to a PREP CONNECT in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) after you drop off your little one. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents who may also be a little apprehensive on their child's first day. A quick departure with a kiss and goodbye with, 'see you this afternoon', from your child's Prep room is the best policy.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL STACEY WOOD
Our vision: Creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to excel.
Jingeri families,
What an incredible, event filled end of term we have shared as a community.
Thank you to all of our staff across the school for all that you do for our students every single day.
Thank you to all of our families – our students’ first teachers – for encouraging and supporting your children in their education.
Thank you to our students – your bright enthusiasm to learn and grow is always a pleasure to see. We are so proud of everything you have each achieved this year.
Looking ahead, we will launch into our ongoing school improvement journey, continuing to build our skills as a positive learning community striving for personal bests and aspiring to excellence.
We continue to invite families to become involved with our P and C, as we seek to partner together in way that will have a real and tangible positive impact for the school.
We will continue to strengthen our transition programs, building upon the great systems already in place.
And we will improve our school systems of communication to ensure our messages to the community are accurate, clear and timely.
Take care this holiday season in whatever way your family chooses to celebrate, and we look forward to seeing you all back with us in 2023.
Stacey Wood
Principal
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL YEARS 3-6 CRAIG CHARLES
'Empowered to Learn'
On behalf of Ms Alice Harvey and myself I’d like to write a quick note to say thank you for everything over this year. This year has had it’s complexities, but as a community, we have demonstrated the spirit that, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going’. Thank you to our whole staff for the quality job they have done this year; Teachers, Support Staff, Office Staff, cleaners, and facilities officers. We have an amazing team and I acknowledge them all. Thank you to our P and C, School Council and Tuckshop. We welcome Mrs Carolyn Wyszynski as P and C President and thank the leadership of Hayley Flynn and the executive team. Especially to our Tuckshop team led by Mrs Melissa Treacy and Alina Ormas personally, thank you for providing my sustenance and producing such nutritious meals for our community this year.
Report Cards
Teachers ensure that you receive an accurate assessment of your child’s achievements and progress. They have been recording results of summative assessments, as well as keeping track of ongoing task completion and achievement. Students want their parents to be proud of what they’ve done and they want to bask in the glow of your approval. As parents you want to be sure your child is developing as they should, and their learning is progressing soundly. That could add up to an awful lot of pressure and tension.
All of this build up culminates in that moment in time when you open the email of 'The Report Card' ready to read it! Before you do, here are some points to consider:
- Report cards are not designed to compare one child’s achievements with another child’s achievements
- As your child moves up in year levels the work becomes more complex so factor this in to your expectation levels
- Look for progress rather than a particular achievement level. Getting a ‘B’ is not the same as getting an ‘A’, but it’s also not the same as a ‘C’
- Affirm the effort they make rather than the final result. Celebrate personal bests and trying hard rather than looking for 10/10
- Avoid nagging about progress such as reading levels and test results. Your child is fully aware of their own abilities and if they feel pressure from you they may choose to avoid work so they can avoid your disapproval
- Read the report card with your child and use the time to celebrate, support and problem solve if it seems needed
- Be honest with your child. Acknowledge that they might find some things difficult and validate how they feel about this while showing them the part they play in moving forward i.e. problem solve
- Finally, remember that parenting is the role in life that challenges us to experience wonder, joy, hope, patience and unconditional love – all in abundance especially at report card time!!
Farewells and Welcomes
There have been significant welcomes and farewells to acknowledge as we prepare to close the chapter on 2022. In absence from us this term I’d like to acknowledge the profound impact of a few staff members whose combined collective of years service adds to beyond a half century of contributions to our community.
Mrs Kate Twomey, whose dedication to personal student success has been a signature of student support at Rochedale South for the better part of two decades. As we reflect as a school, your impacts on families will be long lasting and already known intergenerationally in our community. That legacy will be celebrated annually as we recognise Mrs Twomey’s contributions to supporting students in a perpetual award, “Kate Twomey – Excellence Overcoming Adversity”. We charge you to enjoy the next chapter of your life and send our thanks.
Mr Glynn Priddle, we acknowledge now as retired and thank him for his dedication in returning for the many culminating end of year events that surround our school. Your contributions will be missed.
Ms Chrissy Heenan, has secured a position in leadership as a Head of Department in the year ahead. We know that she will take many of her personal strengths and lessons learned from Rochedale South SS to improve student outcomes and engagement.
I would also like to take the chance to farewell current staff members and acknowledge their impact on their students, colleagues and have added in abundance to our community of care.
Miss Chelsea Ellis, we will thank you for taking on the challenge of starting your teaching career mid year. Under the mentor and guidance of seasoned staff members from the Year 3 team and beyond we have seen you go from strength to strength. Thank you for being joyful and jovial in your daily approach. Keep your eyes set on the difference and impact you make each day in classrooms and you will go far.
Miss Tessa Mills, you were tasked with servicing a specialist areas across our whole school, and have had the privilege of seeing the real growth of students both academically and physiologically. In your short time here the school community will miss your kind and caring nature that has been encountered across our school. We wish you well, and hope your teaching career will blossom at her new school.
Mrs Bel Sealey, you have contributed across our school in many ways ranging from Under 8s, choirs and back stage, costume and blocking design for our musicals. Your love of teaching and love of seeing students rise to a challenge has followed you in all of your purists. We wish you well in your next chapter and host an open invitation to any contributions offered in the future.
Mrs Deb Gordon, Over 16 years ago you have seen our school in development and move through many changes. As a staff member that rarely sits idle you have been an activator of many of the initiatives to our schools next lift, always with a focus set solely on student improvement and community engagement. Thank you for the lasting impact and legacy you leave and know that the initiatives you’ve invested in, will continue for 16 years and more to come, to produce positive outcomes.
Lastly, I would like to address our school principal, Mrs Stacey Wood. This past Monday we conferred Mrs Wood into our community as our permanent principal. On behalf of our community we thank you for your stoic leadership in the face of a multitude of complexities facing schools state wide. In the years ahead we look to you in shaping our future orientation and successes that have hallmarked our great school, on the back of many faithful staff, and now are known in our community. We commend you and thank you for leading our school into 2023.
School Captains 2022-2023
It has been a year of challenges for our 2022 school captains amongst more school closures, interrupted events and last-minute changes. Each and every time they have risen to the challenge, and displayed to our school what is at the heart of leadership. Leadership is doing the right thing when no-one is watching but it is also doing the hard thing. Our leaders have given up their lunch times, set up numerous assemblies and school events and with joy and curious expectation. They have led us through farewells to staff and recently welcomed our current principal, as well as reflected on the sacrifice of our ANZACs. They have stretched themselves, forged through discomfort and presented always with the heart of a leader, always displaying – care, courtesy, cooperation, commitment and you have made a contribution. Let’s congratulate Hamish Milne, Bella Saylor, Matthew Daley and Zoe de’Banks on their sterling year of leadership.
We welcome now our new captains and endorse them into leadership in this coming year. Congratulations to:
School Captains – Cynric Hou & Sasha Huang
Vice School Captains – Rylie Cook & Adyson Robinson

ROCHEDALE ROAD AND PRIESTDALE ROAD INTERSECTION UPGRADE
In preparation for the commencement of the Rochedale Road and Priestdale Road intersection upgrade, night works will be undertaken to coordinate the local network of traffic signals.
Signal upgrades will occur at:
- the intersection of Gardner Road and Miles Platting Road
- the intersection of Rochedale Road and Miles Platting Road, and
- the pedestrian signals on Rochedale Road outside Redeemer Lutheran College.
Works will take approximately one night at each location, between Monday 12 December and Thursday 15 December 2022, from 7pm to 5am, weather permitting. In the event of wet weather, works will take place on the next available day/s.
As the signals will be turned off during works, the signals will be under Police control, to ensure the safety of motorists and site crew.
As we are working at night, you might experience some increased lighting and noise, although we will do our best to minimise the disruptions where possible.
If you have any questions, please contact the Project Team on 1800 669 416 (during business hours) or email cityprojects@brisbane.qld.gov.au. After hours, please call Council’s 24-hour Contact Centre on 3403 8888.
School Property
During this holiday I would like to remind everyone that the school is private property and is not to be used outside of school hours, without written permission. Security and police personnel will be patrolling the school grounds and unauthorised trespassers may be prosecuted. Unfortunately, over the past weeks and during the holiday period is a time of increased damage and vandalism. If you are in the local area please help us to protect school property by calling School Watch on 13 17 88 or the police if you see anyone acting suspiciously or inappropriately on the school grounds.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the school community for their support and work this year. Forming productive parent and school partnerships is a very important factor which allows Rochedale South State School to provide the very best for our students.
Personally, I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday, and look forward to working with you all in the coming year of 2023. Have a good relaxing break and remember school will start for all students on Monday, 23 January. I trust you will enjoy the break and be ready for a new year of growth at Rochedale South.

Inclusion
What an incredible year we have had at Rochedale South State School. A school where Inclusion matters. This is the time of the year we reflect on how far our students have come, their accomplishments including any adversities they have had to overcome. It has taken a community, or as they say, a village.

Change and the New Year ahead.
Change is a part of our daily lives and can sometimes be difficult or tricky to do. Change can be ending one activity and starting another or changing from one environment to another, changing of the TV or getting off a device. Change could be moving from home to school, class to class or even transiting to bedtime. Change can vary from day to day or even moment to moment. Change can be something we build our skills to manage.
Over the holiday period, families prepare for the new school year by talking about what the first day of school will look like, making lunches together, preparing school items and packing a school bag. All these actions, help in preparing children for the first day. Reassuring your child and talking through the big emotions they may be experiencing is important as well as letting them know that the emotions they are feeling is usual and experienced by most people when there is a change.
Positive Partnerships have excellent resources to assist families with change and transition. https://www.positivepartnerships.com.au/resources/practical-tools-information-sheets/transitions-and-planning-for-change

FROM THE HEAD OF CURRICULUM JENNIFER BAMPTON
Wishing all students and families a lovely, relaxing holiday. I hope your days are full of many happy adventures, explorations, sinking in to books, playing games and spending time with the people important to you.
Our students have had many wonderful and engaging experiences within and outside of their classroom this year. We are excited for 2023 and the learning that awaits our students in their next year of schooling!
FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER WENDY GROCOTT
Last week we emailed home statements to all parents with either outstanding fees or credits on their accounts. We require all fee payments to be finalised before the end of the year. Any credits on the accounts can be applied to the new invoices sent out at the start of next year, please advise us that you have the credit and we can apply it for you.
In preparation for 2023 we are looking to increase the number of casual relief staff we can call on to replace our cleaners, teacher aides and grounds officer when they take leave. This work is not a permanent position but rather an on-call availability from time to time, when the need arises.
In order to be considered for any of these relief positions, applicants must hold a paid blue card, provide information to allow a criminal history check to be conducted, complete Mandatory training requirements including several volunteer sessions of training, shadowing an existing staff member to fully understand the job and safety requirements.
A Certificate III in Education Support is an advantage for Teacher Aide work, as is any cleaning experience for cleaner replacement or a trade certificate for grounds work. These also help you to advance in the pay scale if you secure a contract at any time. Other schools in the area are also often looking for replacement staff so we can share your name via the Business Manager network if you are happy for that to happen.
Cleaning staff need to be available to cover split shifts between 5.00am and 9am and again in the afternoon between 2pm and 6pm, they also work through school holidays.
If you or someone you know, would like to be considered as a casual, on-call person for any of the above relief roles, please submit your resume, references and availabilities to the Business manager via email on BSM@rochedalesouthss.eq.edu.au.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all of our families a safe and restful holiday and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

CHAPPY CHAT
Next up regarding RESILIENCE…. gleaned from the work of Maggie Dent in her booklet Building Children’s Resilience - One building block at a time, is Strengthen the Spirit!
The body of a child will not grow if it is not fed; the mind will not flourish unless it is stimulated and guided. And the spirit will suffer if it is not nurtured. R Kessler, The Soul of Education (2000)
The stronger the human spirit, the less disconnected and separated we feel within the world. Our ‘spiritual intelligence’ can include things such as wonder, awe, lightness and laughter, contemplation, calmness and quiet, tenderness and gratitude, listening with the heart. How can you foster this in your child?
- Experience the joy of discovery together – watching Christmas lights, feeling the rain on your skin, exploring in the bush
- Special home and classroom rituals that show everyone matters
- Allow imagination and wonder to be part of your child’s life
- Make the arts a priority every day – dance, sing, create, paint, tell stories
- Hope is a powerful force – without it there is nothing but profound fear, emptiness and despair
- Reward, encourage and model acts of kindness
- Participate in community events
- Speak positively of, and with gratitude for, family experiences
That concludes our walk through this book over the year. I hope you have had some great take-aways from Maggie Dent. You can always explore her website or social media for more great parenting tips.
2023…
Be blessed Rochedale South – may good things come your way, may you be safe and joy filled over the holidays, may you know peace in your homes and may you build wonderful memories together this Christmas.
The Chaplaincy service will operate over 2 days in 2023. We would love you to join our Chappy Committee – please get in touch if you’d like to meet other parents and support the great work that happens in our community. We will be partnering with P&C to run fundraisers in 2023 so there are no big events planned just for Chaplaincy. Our Subway lunches, Chappy week raffles and free dress day will continue.
Have a blessed Christmas and I look forward to reconnecting in the New Year!

FROM THE PARENTS & CITIZENS ASSOCIATION
Dear Parents
We held our last meeting of the year on Monday 21 November and it was great to see new members joining what is currently a small committee. We still need to see more new faces so please if you are available, our first meeting for 2023 is 20 February 2023 at 7pm we would love to meet you at the first meeting of 2023.
It has been a busy few weeks leading up to the end of the school year, with many events being held. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank every volunteer who has helped in any way throughout 2022, without your help events like the Fun Run, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Christmas Stalls would not be able to go ahead. There are some fun events planned for next year that we will be needing help with.
Our aim for 2023 is to build our P&C Committee. If any community members have some spare time to come to meetings, help at events on the day or behind the scenes, or spend some time in the Tuckshop your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Melissa Treacy and Alina Orams have been run off their feet this year with a huge rise in orders. The more parents, Uncles, Aunts, Grandparents, community members, neighbours we can have attached to our committee the better our events can be. You don't have to be a parent or have children at the school to sit on the P&C or help at events.
A strong P&C Committee works closely with the school and builds a strong school community which in turn will benefit the students of the school. We look forward to the many great things 2023 has to offer.
Thank you
Carolyn Wyszynski
P & C President
