FROM THE PRINCIPAL STACEY WOOD
Our vision: Creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to excel.
Thank you to the parent volunteers who have responded to our P & C’s call for assistance to run our end of year school events. These events have formed part of our school’s traditions, and can only happen through the power of our parent volunteers. If you are available to support at one of our upcoming P & C Christmas fundraisers, please contact P&C Rochedale South State School via pandcrsss@gmail.com. We are always looking to welcome new members, as the P & C meetings are a place to capture parent voice in the leadership of our school. We look forward to growing numbers which will create the groundswell for renewed initiatives that will benefit our students.
As we look toward 2023, we begin to prepare our students for successful transitions. We know that even as adults, change can range from feeling stressful to feeling exciting. For our students, preparing to change year levels and teachers can also result in a range of responses. You can help your child to prepare for their transition by calmly talking to them about it and helping them to identify the positives that they will gain from the changes.
This Friday is Remembrance Day. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minutes’ silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation. This week our choir were invited to participate in Draw to Remember, an activity asking students to contemplate the meaning of Remembrance Day and share their understandings through chalk art. Our school was nominated by the local RSL due to our connections with the community, as our choir perform at the community ANZAC service annually. We are one of only 55 schools in Queensland selected to partake in this event this year. The incredible conduct of our students at the ANZAC service was commented on by multiple visitors – a credit to the school, the choir, Jo Cooper and all staff and parents who support our choir. The process involved the students hearing and sharing stories of former Australian Defence Force members, spending time to understand the meaning and the purpose of the day, and using this as inspiration to design images to connect to and reflect on Remembrance Day.
Throughout the Commonwealth and beyond, we remember all who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Help keep their legacy alive by attending a service, reflecting in silence, wearing a poppy, or supporting our veteran community.
LEST WE FORGET.

'Empowered to Learn'
Did you know that our students have dedicated Technology classes once a week in both the upper and lower school? Our wonderful Technology Teacher Mrs Mills allowed me to step into the classroom this week as students across the school have been engaging in their design challenges. Another strong feature of the Term 4 Physical Education plan is the 'gymnastic unit'. Masterfully demonstrated by Mrs Stilanous students have been engaged in multilevel challenges as they navigate some of the Rochedale South gynmastic floor routine.

2023 Laptop Program
Todays’ students think, learn and live in increasingly connected, digital worlds that are only getting more complex. That ability to be a critical consumer of information is necessary to interact as a responsible global citizen. The impact of being digitally literate, will be easily observable in the abilities of Rochedale South students. Seeing students harness technology at home and at school to problem solve and streamline processes that have yet to be solved. A transformative school recognises and further develops these capabilities. It revises curriculum and learning programs to include the opportunities for students to work autonomously and concurrently in the dynamic and challenging online environments. There are opportunities to create, collaborate, communicate and construct powerful and personal learning networks.
It is our mission to see students have streamline access to more information, communication and collaboration tools than ever before seen in education. Such access calls for a new literacy, a digital literacy. One that encompasses the span of social networks, business and communities today.
We invite you to attend and find out more on how you can equip your child to be digitally successful and engage them in their learning through our 1:1 BYODx program.
Information concerning our vendor portals are being distributed today! See your inbox for updated details regarding purchasing
Instrumental Music 2023
Students will be engaging with the whimsical Mrs Warrener this week as Year 3 students get the opportunity to apply for the program. If you have not yet returned the expression of interest that was distributed last term please return it before COB Tuesday November 15.

Preparing for transition and change
Change is a part of our daily lives and can sometimes be difficult or tricky to do. Change can be ending one activity and starting another or changing from one environment to another, changing of the TV or getting off a device. Change could be moving from home to school, class to class or even transiting to bedtime. Change can vary from day to day or even moment to moment. Change can be something we build our skills to manage.
Our teachers implement an enormous array of strategies to assist students in managing change or transitions. A person who finds it difficult to transition or manage change can be anyone and at any time.
Our teachers continuously use a range of strategies and plan for successful transitions especially now, as we head into the remainder of the school year. Some of these include:
- Creating a Transition Placemat about a student which highlights the strengths, interests and challenges. This particularly focusses on strategies that work for the individual.
- Visual supports, social books, photographs of new spaces or environments
- Walks and talks around new spaces or new environments
- Meeting with new staff or potential new friends
- Talking with familiar adults or support people who can share stories and talk through ‘I wonder...’ moments and lots more…

Silkworms in Year 1
Our Year 1 students have been learning so much about silkworms and silkworm moths. They have been following the life cycle from caterpillar to cocoon to moth to egg. The students have been fascinated by the process and so eager to talk about everything they have been learning!
Reading and writing float on a sea of talk
Oral language development is extremely important for all our students from P-6. From P-6, it is important that parents and carers are having face-to-face conversations with their children every day. This builds a student’s ability to express themselves verbally, encourages thinking and builds language structure vocabulary. These skills are the foundation of reading and writing throughout life.
Reading every day
We are all readers at Rochedale South SS! Read to your child, read with your child and talk about what your child is reading. Reading is one of the joys of childhood and opens up a world beyond the everyday experiences of a child. Younger children also enjoy having a book reread to them many times and the research shows this rereading develops language and vocabulary.

Booklists and Fees for 2023
As we start to wrap up our year and countdown to Christmas holidays, it is also time to start thinking about 2023. Please find attached the booklists for Years 3 to 6 for 2023. We have not sourced a provider this year but instead provide you now with the list of requirements that can be taken to a stationery store of your choice for filling out as you need. Some items such as headphones and calculators can be reused from previous years.
As in past years Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 booklists are provided through the Consumables Student Resource Scheme which remains at $125 for 2023. Invoices will be emailed out early 2023 to all families that have already agreed to participate. You can still choose to opt in or out of the scheme for next year by completing a form available in the office.
Year 3 Booklist
Year 4 Booklist
Year 5 Booklist
Year 6 Booklist
We will also be operating the Student Resource Scheme for all year levels next year but due to increasing costs have set the fee to $125 to help cover all the resources needed. This invoice will also be emailed out at the beginning of the year to all participating families. Payment plans and Centrepay payments are available for both of these Schemes to allow them to be paid off across the year. Please contact the finance team to organise this for you. Resources and passwords can be issued on receipt of the first payment.
Facilities news
We were fortunate last week to receive 5 lovely scribbly gums to enhance our oval plantings. We would like to thank Debbie Laporte for thinking of us and organising this, as well as Orterra, Groundwork, and AILA National for their generous donation.

CHAPPY CHAT
Next up regarding RESILIENCE...gleaned from the work of Maggie Dent in her booklet Building Children's Resilience - One building block at a time, is self-mastery...the ability to become competent and taste success in preparation for adulthood.
Learning and success encompass so much more than getting ten out of ten for a spelling test. Learning and success are about inner happiness, intrinsic motivation and having the confidence and competence for discovery and learning. Kath Walker, What's the Hurry? (2005)
The taste of sweet success becomes a healthy motivator for children to learn; they have also learned that mistakes can be corrected and overcome with persistence. These are very important emotional competences that children develop when they are young. Overcoming setbacks is a critical part of resilience.
Here are some tips from Maggie Dent to help build self-mastery:
- allow your child to express themselves and be heard
- encourage children to persevere at tasks until they are completed
- small things are the big things - let children tie their own laces, pack and carry their school bag, clean teeth, climb trees
- have high, positive expectations without being unrealistic
- teach children to make their own healthy snacks
- teach children road rules when riding a bike or walking along the road
Coming up...

Interschool Sport
Well done to all students who have represented Rochedale South State School teams in Interschool Sport this semester. Our school fielded four Basketball teams and three Netball teams in Logan District Competitions this semester and our season comes to an end this Friday with teams competing in the Finals round.
Our Boys Basketballers have made a few finals to be played here on our school courts on Friday.
The Junior A's will play Springwood Road in a District Grand Final at 1:11pm on Court 4. The Junior B's will play Harris Fields in a B Division Grand Final at 12:40pm on Court 3.
The Senior B's will play Waterford West at 12:40pm in a B division Grand Final on Court 1, and the Senior A's will play Kingston in a 3rd place playoff match at 1:42pm on Court 2. The boys have displayed excellent commitment and enthusiasm in trainings and matches all season and are pumped for these Final games. Good luck boys!
Our Netball Teams will play in the finals round at Ewing Park this Friday. Our Senior A Netball Team have had excellent results this season and at the time of writing this article were sitting in 3rd place on the ladder and look set to play in a 3rd place match, while our Senior B teams are sitting in 3rd and 4th and will likely play off for 3rd in the B Division. Our amazing Netball coaches, Ms Podmore and Mrs Owens, have said our Netball students this season have consistently shown up to training each week and continued to improve, have worked well as a team, have always shown great sportsmanship whilst encouraging each other, and that it has been a pleasure coaching them this year. Good luck Netballers for this Friday, we are super proud of you.
A big thank you to Mrs Owens and Ms Podmore who have trained their Netball teams mid-week all season and taken them to sport on Fridays. Also, a big thank you to Mr Hogan who has trained and coached his two Junior Basketball teams to two Grand Finals in his first year in the role. Thank you, teachers, and good luck to all students this Friday.

Alina Orams
Fundraising Co-ordinator
Greetings from the P&C!
We have been busy this term and we would love to share with our parents what we have been up to! The P&C work hard behind the scenes fundraising and running our tuckshop (thankyou to Melissa Treacy and Alina Orams for doing such an amazing job!) and the results of their hard work often go unreported.
This term the P&C are proud to report that we have contributed $5000 towards our new sets of homereaders that have been rolled out in our Prep-1 classrooms. We have also contributed $3000 towards our new Performing Arts uniforms for our students to professionally represent our school at public events. In addition, we also sponsored the return trip from Yr 6 camp, to ease the pressure of bus fares on the school.
We cannot do these amazing things for our school without your support and help however! Our next big fundraising event is our Christmas Concert, but we need volunteers to help with stalls, sideshow activities, and food sales. If you think you can help us out on the night (Monday 5th December from 4:30pm), please email PandCRSSS@gmail.com or chat to Alina in the tuckshop!
We look forward to building up our team on the P&C and to continue to make great changes together!

OCTOBER UPDATE
As the saying goes, “time flies when you’re having fun”, and this has certainly shown to be true as term four seems to have flown by at YMCA! The weather has been wonderful which has allowed for lots of outdoor games and activities. Adventure and imaginative play has been particularly popular, cricket is coming back in to fashion as Summer approaches, and another game which has recently taken over is ‘Last to Leave the Mat’.
As always, there are lots of indoor options for those children wanting to stay inside, with our wide array of construction and building resources constantly being put to use. Art and craft has included a variety of different activities, but strangely enough a simple colouring in or drawing is often the most popular choice!
On Friday afternoon, we hosted our YMCA Family BBQ which included loads of flavoursome food, and plenty of good old-fashioned family fun. It was a splendid afternoon, and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as we did. Here are a few happy snaps of some recent action at YMCA, we hope that the rest of term will be smooth sailing for all of the children, teachers and families as we approach the end of the year.
