FROM THE PRINCIPAL STACEY WOOD
Our vision: Creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to excel.
As always, the end of term is a fantastic time to celebrate the teaching and learning that has occurred throughout the school. Students have worked hard to complete a range of assessments, while our teachers have been busy marking, moderating and reporting. End of Semester reports are a great time to reflect on the learning achievements so far and celebrate the resilience of our young learners.
This term has been a lot more settled than Term 1, though not without interruptions as Covid continues to impact student and staff attendance, as well as shortages for relieving staff. Despite the interruptions, we can celebrate the creative ways our teachers and support staff have planned around these challenges in an ever-changing climate.
As we begin to set our sights on Term 3, we look forward to our next steps encouraging our school vision – empowering all students to excel – socially, emotionally and academically. We continue to partner with our families and engage members of each child’s home as the First Teachers. We continue to set high expectations for students, staff and school leaders. And we continue to try to “Level Up!” our student outcomes as we consistently build student ownership over their own learning.
This term we also farewell a much-loved member of our school community – Year 6 teacher Mr Glynn Priddle. Mr Priddle has served the Rochedale South community as an educator for the last 24 years, and his impact on the lives of his students is immeasurable. We wish Mr Priddle well on his new life adventures and know that he will be a sorely missed member of our staff.
As the holidays approach, we remind our students to enjoy some well earned down time. For families and staff who are travelling this holidays we wish you safe travels, and look forward to seeing everyone back and ready for learning in Term 3.

'Empowered to Learn'

This past fortnight has been a hive of activity at our school. Students have been keenly preparing themselves for the athletics carnival, PBL rewards days and end of semester celebrations. On top of our end of term activity has been the trusted Life Education lessons.
Staffing
As the Deputy Principal for the past half of a decade, I have had the privilege of working alongside a staff member who has become intrinsic to the very fabric of Rochedale South State School and near synonymous with even the utterance of the name. I would like to take the opportunity to wish Mr Glynn Priddle some restful weeks ahead as he accesses some well earned long service leave. At the same time, I would like to thank him for the opportunity to see how he imbues the celebration, challenging, the good work of Rochedale South State School.
In all things, Glynn leads the good work that Rochedale South is known for and with his whitty repartee has captured and engaged the hearts and minds of students of our school for almost three decades. On behalf of the staff body and community, past and present, we wish you well over the coming weeks and hope you enjoy well deserved time with friends, family and loved ones.
Recent Events
Year 4 students are preparing to engage in their first semester of learning through the Bring Your Own Device Program (BYOD). Teachers and students are busily preparing for the introduction of student devices into the room and looking forward to continuing with the digital learning our Year 4 students have previously been afforded through our laptop hire program. For more information please visit our website here.
Upcoming Events
PBL rewards days will be celebrated across our school on Tuesday 21 June. Students will be recieving their invitations to the various rewards across the school this Friday and we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the great Learners that we have at Rochedale South. This semester students who have been inducted into the plus 50 Cal Club will have a range of choices in their rewards day with our lower school engaging in; Craft-e-noons, Buddy Movie and Disco, and our upper school; STEM Tinker Tasks, Mini Olympics and Water Fight.
Our annual Atheletics Carnival is being held over two days, with senior athletics on Wednesday June 22 and Junior athletics June 23. Community are welcome to observe on these days and we look forward to hosting you. A reminder that students are required to stay onsite and with their respective classes during the day and parents/caregivers are required to sign them out via the office prior to leaving site.
Semester reports
School reports will be sent home on Thursday June 23 this semester. Teachers have done a thorough job with report writing and providing feedback to our students. Our students have engaged deeply with the units this term and have enhanced their work by utilising the third teacher space through each classes bump it up walls. Our Leadership Team have been reading and reviewing reports over this last week which has highlighted the depth and enjoyment our students have experienced in this full term of school.
Our reporting for Semester One has been a cause for celebration as well as looking at our longitudinal growth over the past four years. I will be sharing some more insights into the reporting period data at the commencement of Term 3. Our school population continues to grow, unsurprisingly, as the comments from community continue to be positive. The increase to population had not hampered the maintenance of our students achieving at and above level (A-C) in each Key Learning Area (KLA) of English, Mathematics and Science in fact it has continued to grow.
This past year has seen our School Explicit Agenda (EIA) focus on, the growth of student learning and achievement through ‘Levelling Up’ and ‘High Expectations’. Our priority this year continues to be that focus in the KLA of English.
Can I congratulate our students, parents, teachers and staff on seeing our students learning, connection to the work, and articulating their next best learning moves, as being 'the work'.
School Holidays
Shortly we will be demarking the end of Term 2 and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Over the school holidays no one can access the school grounds after hours without written permission from the Principal. If you see anything suspicious, please don't attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number on 131788. The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in Queensland schools. Let's work together to help create a safer school community
Changes to the road alignment on Rochedale Road and Priestdale Road, near the intersection, will be introduced from Monday 20 June, between 7am and 5pm, weather and site conditions permitting.
Motorists are encouraged to follow reduced speed limits and take care when travelling through the works zone due to these changed traffic conditions. Traffic control and signage will be on site to assist pedestrians and motorists.
These traffic switches will allow works to progress within different sections of the road on Priestdale Road east and Rochedale Road north. Further traffic switches will be required as part of our works, so we ask that you please drive carefully through the work site and follow onsite signage and direction from traffic controllers. Access to residential properties and businesses will be maintained, however there will be some access changes.
THALLON STREET CLOSURE
From Monday 4 July, Thallon Street at the intersection with Priestdale Road will be closed to motorists. This closure will remain until mid-August 2022 to allow works to take place on the southern side of Priestdale Road east. Residents on Thallon Street will be required to access their properties via Netherby Street.
During these works, traffic control and signage will be on site to assist pedestrians and motorists. Pedestrian access will be maintained on the northern and southern side of Priestdale Road east.
For more information about these upcoming works, please contact the project team on 1800 669 416 (during business hours) or email cityprojects@brisbane.qld.gov.au. After hours, please call Council’s 24-hour Contact Centre on 3403 8888.
Community Connection
ROCHEDALE STATE HIGH SCHOOL - Collaboration
This term a select group of upper school students have had the opportunity to engage with the Senior Apex students from Rochedale State High School. Our students are collaborating and performing alongside the star students to create and perform an original performance on the theme of 'identity'. We look forward to keeping you updated on their progress. A performance will be held next term with dates and times of their performance to be released early next term.
Yours in Education,
Craig Charles

High Expectations of our students, our staff and our community…
Intentional Collaboration
This week the school has funded additional non-contact time so that year levels can come together and plan teaching and learning sequences for Term 3. Our teachers work extremely hard to ensure the Australian Curriculum is taught with rigor plus the units of work that our students are learning about, are contextual and engaging. As part of this week, students have a slightly different time for their specialist subjects to fit in the timetable. As parents, be excited about their units of work, this brings about a sense of excitement and it rubs off onto your children.
At staff meeting this week, all staff are involved in Moderation. A whole school approach to moderation processes underpins a systematic curriculum delivery and supports teachers to align curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting; and ensures consistency of teacher judgments and accuracy of reporting against the Australian Curriculum achievement standards. Parents should feel confident that your child’s report reflects the moderation process. Teachers use the achievement standards written by the Australian Curriculum to base their A-E judgements. Through student’s summative assessments and student work, teachers gather evidence of student learning against the relevant achievement standards to ensure consistent and accurate teacher judgments. At our staff meeting, teachers reach a consensus (agreement) to ensure consistent and accurate teacher judgments. This moderation provides students and their parents/carers with confidence that the awarded grades are an accurate judgment of achievement and that the report is meaningful, professional and consistent.
Reporting
As previously mentioned, report marks and comments will be generated and sent to parents at the end of Week 10 of Term 2. These academic reports inform to you about your child’s achievement and progress for each learning area and/or subject undertaken, at a point in time. Reporting builds the school-parent partnership to improve student learning and I encourage you to CELEBRATE your child’s report with them. Pay attention to the level of effort that your child is receiving, as this can be indicative of whether your child has been trying their best or not. Evidence suggests that effort is a precursor to success and achievement at school.
I would like to wish all my families a happy and restful school holidays. Our students have earned this break. Make sure your children have plenty of time outdoors, rain hail or shine. There is strong evidence to suggest that child’s wellbeing is linked to the time spent outdoors. A walk around the block with the dog, a kick at the local footy oval or a play at the park are so important for a child’s wellbeing. As adults, spending time in nature has big benefits for your mental wellbeing. It’s also been shown to have wider health benefits like building your immune system and lowering your blood pressure. Thank you to all our parents and guardians who support our students to be creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to excel.
Celebration of Learning
I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the Year 1’s learning this term in English. Students have been working towards, understanding the different purposes of texts and making connections to personal experience when explaining characters and main events in short texts. Student had to describe characters and settings to gain a deeper comprehension. In both these amazing work samples, students wrote about literal and implied meanings from the books they read. Well done!

Met East Cross Country
Congratulations to Evie Smith who represented Logan District at the Met East Regional Cross Country Carnival at John Paul College Fields on Monday 6th June. Evie ran in the 12yr Girls event and placed 24th in the Region, a strong result at this level of competition. Well done Evie on this wonderful achievement, our school is proud of you.

CHAPPY CHAT
I’m going to diverge from my notes on resilience to focus on diversity in this update. Though as I write I reflect that the two go hand in hand!
During Chappy Week we were able to acknowledge National Sorry Day on 26 May, a day to remember Australia’s stolen generations and reflect on how we can move forward from the mistakes of our past. Later on in July we will celebrate NAIDOC Week with a 2022 theme of ‘Get up, Stand up, Show up!’.
It is currently Refugee Week and the theme this year is ‘healing’. We know that healing happens when brave people ‘show up’ and tell their stories, speak their truth. The organisers of Refugee Week share these words on their website:
Australia and the rest of the world have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hit the reset button on how we behave towards one another. The importance of human connections has been underscored by the pandemic and such lessons can help us in so many ways. Mainstream and refugee communities alike can draw upon shared hardship to heal wounds, to learn from each other and to move forward. Healing can occur through storytelling, through community and also through realisation of our intrinsic interconnectedness as individuals.
At Rochedale South SS we take pride in our policies of inclusion and belonging for all staff, students and their families. We value the diversity that exists in our demographic – we represent many nations and cultures, genders and religions, ages and experiences, and we love that we get to learn together! Our interconnectedness creates a space where all can feel safe and all can participate. Let’s continue to build on this fabulous grounding as we get set for Term 3.
WHAT’S ON…so much to be grateful for!
CONNECT Dads and Kids Campout
Woo hoo! The campout was excellent! We have over 30 camp sites occupied, with more than 75 campers enjoying s’mores around the fire. It would be great to make this an annual event but we need a team of Dad’s to get behind it – if you’d like to join the Dad’s group leaders please get in touch with me.
Chappy Week 2022 done and dusted
Thank you to all who supported Chappy Week this year. The Eco Rangers led a wonderful Eco Day with 3W taking out the Nude Food Lunches competition. There were lots of winners in our Lego and Eco builds, and the staff once again took out the Staff V Students sporting match.
Pick of the Crop
With the support of some of our incredible teachers we’ve secured $5000 in government funding to support our students to eat more fruit and vegetables! As a result expect to see garden beds popping up around the place as we start to rollout this initiative. In Term 3, all preps to Year 2 students will participate in a STEAM* workshop by local artist/author/illustrator Megan Forward. I can’t wait to see what they produce during the workshops! Check out more here: https://hw.qld.gov.au/pick-of-the-crop/ * Science Technology Engineering Art Maths
