Our vision: Creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to excel.

Wood_Stacey.jpgJingeri families!

It has been an absolute pleasure entering classrooms in recent weeks and observing students empowered in their learning. We continue to share our successes as a school with other schools across the South East Region, and are able to celebrate our expert teaching team as we model best practice for others.

There have also been some fantastic connections made with parents and our new P & C Committee have had some productive meetings discussing our projects for 2022. New members are always welcome – please contact Admin@rochedalss.eq.edu.au for more information.

Unsupervised Drop Offs

We are currently experiencing a high volume of children being dropped off to school in the mornings without adequate supervision from a parent/carer.

Please be advised that children remain under the duty of care of their parents/carers before the commencement of the school day and it is expected that families make appropriate care arrangements to secure the safety and wellbeing of their children. Arrangements may be informal, such as with extended family members, or formal, such as Outside of school hours care (OSHC) bookings.

We recognise that scheduled working hours for parents do not always align with school supervision, and this can add pressure for families. If you would like to discuss how we can best support you to meet this responsibility, please don’t hesitate to contact the Office on 3340 0777 to arrange a meeting with either the Principal or Deputy Principals.

You may like to refer to the below information for our on-site OSHC provider. This information can also be found on our school website:

Out of school hours care

A quality Outside school hours program (before/after school and on vacations) is available on site in our Performing Arts Centre.

Hours of operation

  • 6:30 am to 9.00 am - before school.
  • 3:00 pm to 6.00 pm - after school.

Call 3841 6613 between the hours listed above to find out more information.

Thank you for prioritising the safety and wellbeing of our students.

'Empowered to Learn'

Craig Charles newsletter photo 2018.jpgDear Parents/Caregivers,

School life has progressed quickly over the past three weeks with our school engaging in NAPLAN testing, Mother's Day stalls, subway lunches and Year 6 School Camp.  The narrative has also been governed by the undulating weather patters which have seen our learners and educators live closely together and improve our resilience.  Can I compliment our school community for equipping our students to be flexible in the face of change and to support our developing students to face challenges head on.  This was manifest in our experiance with the Year 6 students, who in my opinion, rose to that challenge and respresented our school's motto - 'creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to execl'.  Facing torrential downpours whilst facing fears and extending their boundaries, our students encouraged, inspired and pushed each other to excel.

You can see the results here

Video Games - Are You Aware?

Of late there has been an increased interest with students, as early as Year 1, in playing games that are Player verse Player (PvP).  Often in these contexts it’s near impossible to censor the player to the global chat that is occurring in game. Along with exposing children to a host of worldviews, players are also confronted with the content in these games.  Our classifications for movies and games protect young eyes and developing minds from being overwhelmed with concepts that can  a) inflict trauma, trauma being an unhealthy/obsessive/or mimicked response to dealing with mature concepts that the brains hasn’t developed responses to yet.  b) develop a dependency on using electronic conduits as a means for socialising.

The ‘Office of the eSafety Commissioner’ reports the following:

  • Online multiplayer gaming is a very popular activity for young Australians; with 6 in 10 young people aged 8-17 having played these games.
  • Nearly 1 in 2 young people have played esport video game titles.
  • An estimated 17% of multiplayer gamers experienced in-game bullying.

Fortnite is a game that we are seeing unhealthy and obsessive responses to of late and we ask parents to consider the following before engaging in media and video games:

1. Check the age recommendation for the movie or video game. If it is higher than your child’s actual age, it may not be suitable.

2. Check the content – what does the advisory information state about the movie or game’s content? Does it contain strong language, violence or sexual references? Will you be comfortable exposing your child to this type of material?

raisingchildren.png

3. Look up the Classification Board decision about the movie or game you are thinking of watching or playing. Access the public database here.

4. Read reviews to see what other parents, experts and users are saying about a particular movie or video game.

https://esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent/multimedia-reviews/movies-and-games/choosing-movies-and-games

The question to ask is, are you aware or in control of the interactions that are occurring in game and in online forums?

Parents looking for a repository of game and media reviews can be found at:

https://www.commonsensemedia.org/game-reviews

Positive Behaviour for Learning - Play

As we continue to journey into creating a positive culture for learning, I have a challenge for you. When a child is often upset it is hard to gain perspective of the good things and can focus on the absolute statements like;  “no one likes to play with me” or “everyone laughed at me”. These are the teachable moments of trying to find one good thing in a moment, situation or day. These conversations build our students and community. They open the door to being positive and drawing out of the absolutist statements we can often cast over situations. Once we have zoomed out it is often easier to find solutions then when we are stuck in the mud.

From a resilience perspective, parents need to coach kids through some of their more challenging moments, which have been increasing in frequency with the added benefit of time together, and review what they may have learned for next time. Avoid solving all their problems for them. You can promote a lasting sense of resilience in your children by:

  • Having a positive attitude yourself. Your attitude as a parent impacts on their ability to bounce back from some of the difficulties they face. Make sure you model a ‘you can do it’ attitude for your child when s/he is thrown some of life’s curve balls.
  • Look for teachable moments. Many kids’ learning opportunities are disguised as problems. Make the most of these opportunities so that kids can grow and learn from some of the challenges they face.
  • Make kids active participants in the family. Active participation in a family develops the self-help, problem-solving and independence skills of kids that are necessary for resilience.
  • Build kids’ coping skills. There are plenty of strategies you can pass on to kids to help them cope when life doesn’t go their way, including acceptance, getting away for a while, and normalisation.

Promoting resilience in kids is a not a single event but a continuous process that requires adults to be supportive and empathetic when things don’t go their way. It also requires you as a parent to have an understanding of resilience, so you have faith in yourself, and your child’s ability to cope.  I want to encourage all of our parents, you are doing the toughest job out there, keep up the good work.

Winter Uniform

With the first signs of winter appearing last week it is timely to remind families that our school has a P&C endorsed Dress Code. In addition to our summer uniform, students are allowed to wear:

  • Green track pants
  • Navy blue fleecy or zip up jacket (sew on badges also available from uniform shop)
  • Bottle Green or Navy Blue plain or ribbed tights may also be worn under shorts.

Tights or track pants in any other colour are not acceptable, nor are jeans. Jumpers of varying colours are also not allowed. We would appreciate if you can please ensure your children are dressed appropriately in accordance with our School Uniform Policy.

Community Connection

Rochedale State High School - Science Extension

Last week a select group of students from our Year 5 and 6 cohort had the opportunity to engage with our local high school in the exciting area of science.  Chemical changes, bunsen burners and safety in a lab framed the curiosity of our learners.  Congratulations to all of our studentes for representing our school with such pride.  Teachers and administrators complimented our students engagement and conduct.  Thank you too, to all of our parent volunteers for making the day possible.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data- NCCD

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) takes place every year. The NCCD is a collection that counts

  • the number of school students receiving an adjustment or ‘help’ due to disability
  • the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students.

Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability.

This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability.

The NCCD uses the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. All schools provide this information to education authorities.

The data collection will be submitted by the 12th August.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is held each year from 27 May to 3 June. The 2022 theme is “Be Brave. Make Change.”

It’s a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Rochedale South State School supports and recognises the importance to learn about shared histories, cultures and how we as a community contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Dear parent/carers

Statements will be sent out again at the end of this week to help keep your budget on track. Please remember though that if you have a minus (-) sign next to the amount, that you are in credit, do not pay this again. There was some confusion last week with the Life Education payments with many being paid twice. If this is the case in your house, please ask us to allocate the overpayment either to another outstanding invoice or a new invoice the next time you receive one. The  QParents app is  a good way to check what you have outstanding if ever you are unsure about whether a payment has been made or not.

A friendly reminder that if you are paying your Student Resource fees in instalments that the second instalment is now due, especially for those in the Year 5 and 6 laptop programs, to ensure your students have continued access to their devices over the holidays.

CHAPPY CHAT

Next up regarding RESILIENCE…. gleaned from the work of Maggie Dent in her booklet Building Children’s Resilience - One building block at a time, is the impact of safe and nurturing care within the circle of family.

If we love our children and want them to thrive, we must allow them more time and opportunity to play, not less.  Dr Peter Gray, ‘The play deficit’ 2013.

Here’s some things you can do to make play a part of everyday:

  • Visit the local park
  • Get out in the back yard and explore the trees and plants, animals and insects, the sky
  • Have play dates with friends, cousins, and others – and give children unstructured outdoor time to use their imaginations
  • Play a board or card game together
  • Throw and catch a ball
  • Rough and tumble play safely supervised is very healthy, especially with Dad

WHAT’S ON…so much to be grateful for!

Dear Parents,

Fun Run prizes have been ordered and your child will be receiving them in the coming weeks.

Thank you for all your support for the Mother’s Day Stall. The children were excited to purchase gifts for Mum. Special mention goes to all the volunteers that assisted with the stall over the two days.  Events such as these organised by the P&C could not occur without the assistance and support of the school Community.

Congratulation to the raffle winners.

Building Fun

Working together on projects has been a recurring theme at YMCA recently. The kids have been putting in a lot of man-power and hours of dedication to build a functional tepee on the top oval. It took a huge effort to build and stabilise the tepee but with constant effort the kids were able to produce a strong, sturdy foundation for their structure. Using only natural resources, this group project is a great example of what can be achieved when we work together using our hands and a little ingenuity.
