Term 1 Week 9 newsletter
On Monday 18 March we held our Annual General Meeting for the P and C. At this time, we were able to thank our outgoing executive members for their dedicated contributions to our school and students. In particular, I would like to acknowledge John M for his time as Vice-President of the P and C throughout 2023.
It is with great excitement that I announce our 2024 P and C Executive Team:
- President – Carolyn W
- Vice President – Phillip T
- Treasurer – Rebecca B
- Secretary – Sarah P
This team of parents have already made arrangements for our first Executive meeting for the year and we are looking forward to some exciting planning and events in the future. To get on board with our growing team, please reach out to pandcrsss@gmail.com .
At Rochedale South State School one of our key priorities for 2024 is to continue to develop a learning community that nurtures excellence. Within this priority, we have identified refurbishment of infrastructure to provide upgraded learning spaces as an important strategy for promoting positive school culture.
Commencing on the Easter break, we will be receiving 4 more roof replacements (5 roofs were replaced in 2023). This development is both a safety and aesthetic upgrade, representing a significant investment from the department.
What this means for you and your child/ren:
- the tuckshop will close in week 10 of this term (next week)
- the tuckshop will operate from the PAC with a limited menu from the commencement of Term 2 - students will not be able to purchase items over the counter during this time
- the administration and leadership teams will temporarily relocate to the library for the beginning of Term 2
- classes in Year 4 and 6O will be relocated for the commencement of Term 2 - some have already moved in preparation of this timeline
- Prep K will temporarily relocate about halfway into Term 2
Timelines may be impacted by the weather, the service providers or the supply of materials. We will continue to share updates as works are finalised. We ask all families to remind students to be safe around work sites and not to enter fenced off areas, for example.
With these roof replacements completed, we can look forward to working with the department to advance other capital works listed within our strategic infrastructure plan from Semester 2.

'Empowered to Learn'

What a term it has been at Rochedale South State School! From exciting incursions to thrilling inter-school sports competitions, swimming lessons to energetic discos, and the prestigious induction of our student leaders, it's been a whirlwind of activity and achievement. As we reflect on the past term, we're filled with pride at the incredible experiences and opportunities our students have enjoyed, alongside the collaborative efforts that have enriched our school community. Join us as we celebrate the highlights and successes of this action-packed term!
We are thrilled to announce that Mathematics will be a central focus across our school this year. This term a guiding coallition is spearheading our work in finding best practice for Mathematics instruction. Our staff have been engaging in professional learning sessions and collaborating closely with esteemed experts Joanne McEachen and Rob Profitt-White, renowned global leaders in Mathematics and Inquiry pedagogy. These sessions have empowered our educators with innovative strategies and insights to enrich our Mathematics curriculum delivery. Together, we are dedicated to enhancing the authenticity and relevance of Mathematics tasks, ensuring our students engage with real-world applications and develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We are excited about the transformative impact this collective cluster focus will have on our students' mathematical learning journeys.
The Student Council is in full flight with funding their next actions in supporting their community, students are buzzing from their successful Disco in Week 4. More events, and fundraisers will be announced for Term 2.
Part of the routine for teachers, parents and students is setting ourselves up for success each morning. This is usually done by having a familiar routine. In wanting to set the culture for our day we are asking parents to support students in setting up their day by seeing our students arrive between 8.30-9.00am each morning.
Student leaders and teachers are planning on making our Run Club a centre point of interaction each morning. A reminder that Run Club is being hosted each week from 8:20am:
Monday - Students from Year 1-2
Tuesday - Students from Year 3-4
Wednesday - Students from Year 5-6
Student Leadership @ RSSS
I would like to congratulate all of our school leaders who were recently inducted, last month. They have already risen to the mantle of leadership in all areas of our school.
If you missed out on the ceremony, our student leader representatives took an oath of service which pledged;
As a student leader of Rochedale South State School, I promise:
- to lead by example in behaviour and school spirit, reflecting the 5C’s, and our school rules,
- to follow all school rules and make decisions that reflect commitment to doing what is right,
- to adhere to the school dress code and wear my school uniform with pride,
- to persistently apply myself to my learning, both at school and at home, and
- to work hard to make a contribution that will support my school’s development and promote its good reputation within the wider community.
I understand the importance of my role in helping to set high standards within our school and hereby pledge to undertake these responsibilities to the best of my ability.
It was our community’s privilege to see our students proudly take this oath with conviction and we look forward to seeing the impact a group of passionate young leaders can have on a community.
Congratulations to our 2024 student leadership body:

Halogen Young Leaders Day
Our School Captains led themselves, and myself, to the National Young Leaders Day conference. Katana, Edward, Johnathon and Olivia journeyed to the Brisbane convention centre along with over five hundred other young leaders to be inspired by some of the best Australia has to offer.
The young leaders were challenged by Ben Polson Multiple Australian Ninja Warrior champion and now world champion! Author and Illustrator of Macca the Alpacca and now coauthor with Eva Amores of 'The Worst Week Ever!' Anastasia Woolmer has twice been crowned with the unique title of being the Australian Memory Champion. Finally the leaders marvelled at the worlds youngest solo flight piolet Lachie Smart.
Pictured below our captains represented our school with pride, notable Olivia Hollaway bested world chapion Nija Warrior in a push up challenge.
Our leaders were especially challenged by author Hillary Rogers and Ben Pulson. Both spoke about overcoming dyslexia to not only excel at what they are doing now but to deeply engage with communication and the written word.
Our leaders thought it was a worthwhile day with these lessons:
“Give the power of a cheese sandwich... you never know when kindenss will change the world”
“When you get into trouble remember to P – have a Positive Perspective, Push yourself, be Playful and Persevere.”
“There are times when you will be feeling higher than the ceiling, and others when you feel lower than the floor, being a leader is showing up irrespective of how you feel to achieve a goal bigger than yourself.”

Principal Morning Tea - Celebrating Students of the Week
We were delighted to host a special morning tea to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students who have been awarded Student of the Week this term. It was a joyous occasion filled with laughter, camaraderie, and proud moments as students were recognized for their dedication, perseverance, and positive contributions to our school community. The morning tea provided a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with each other, share stories of their accomplishments, and enjoy delicious treats in the company of our supportive staff. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the deserving recipients and express our gratitude to our Principal, Stacey Wood for organising such a meaningful event to celebrate our students' success.

ANZAC day March – Thursdsay April 25
We are hoping to continue with the ANZAC day march this year. It will be hosted again at the Springwood Park located on Cinderella Avenue with marshalling at the top of Fitzroy Street. If you would like to attend, an EOI will be sent home in the first week of Term 2 to register your attendance, which is vitally important so that we can provide attendance to the Tri-Services League. Our choir has been honoured and invited to sing the Australian & New Zealand National Anthem. We look forward to gathering as a community to commemorate our ANZACs.
Save the date also for our School ANZAC ceremony which will be held the day prior on Wedensday April 24 at 9:15am in the Performing Arts Centre.
Community Connection
Harmony Day
This year Rochedale South celebrated a whole week of ‘inclusiveness, respect and everyone belonging.’ We were fortunate to have a motivated teaching community who offered our students the chance to engage with some cultural tasks during our lunch breaks: Torres Strait inspired weaving, Chinese Lantern building, and an ancestral genome tree which will be displayed in our PAC foyer in the coming term. Our week was then tipified by our Parade of Nations.
Our school and community are all the richer for understanding and finding insight into the great diversity that stiches the fabric of our school together to make it a place where we ‘learn to live together.’

Access to School Grounds STOP DROP GO AT ROCHEDALE SOUTH
The Stop-Drop-Go is there for everyone’s convenience but becomes unmanageable if cars are left parked in the zone. School staff supervise this area after school to ensure our students are safe as they leave school when waiting for pick up. However it is not the school’s responsibility to manage the “STOP, DROP GO” zone. School staff do not have any authority over road users.
Police and Local Law Officers have informed me that there will also be regular patrols to ensure drivers are adhering to the road rules. It is the responsibility of the driver of a vehicle to be aware of the Queensland Traffic Act and to drive and use the roads appropriately.
I don’t believe anyone would deny that the safety of our school’s children is of the highest priority and making our “STOP, DROP GO”, work properly will add to a safe environment for all. Some points to ensure you follow are listed below.
- If there is no space available in the “STOP, DROP GO”, zone you need to move on (go around the block) or find another place to park.
- Under no circumstances do you park across the school driveways or any other driveway. The school driveways must be left clear for disability access, staff access, school service providers and emergency services.
- Always move as far forward as possible in the “STOP, DROP GO Zone to enable effective and safe use of the zone. This may mean you and your children need to walk a little further.
- Never leave your car parked in the “STOP, DROP GO Zone during operation hours. The zone operates from 7am to 9am and 2pm – 4pm on School Days.
- If you are a pedestrian, set the example to your children as well as respect road users by using our designated crossing areas.
- Above all be patient and respectful, our children’s safety depends on you. Remember children learn by your example.
Thank you to Logan City Council and Parents in keeping our Stop, Drop and Go a safe place for our families.
Welcome to Rochedale South
We are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to the newest members of the Rochedale South teaching team, Mrs. Louise Schuster and Mr. Andy Wang! Mrs. Schuster will be joining us to inspire and guide our Year 3 students, bringing her passion for education and wealth of experience to the role. Mr. Wang will be a valuable addition to our Year 4 team, bringing fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to support our students' learning journey. We are excited to have such dedicated and talented educators on board, and we look forward to the positive impact they will make within our school community. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Mrs. Schuster and Mr. Wang as they embark on this exciting new chapter with us at Rochedale South State School!
As we approach the April break, I want to extend warm wishes to you and your loved ones. Easter is a time for reflection and celebration, and I hope it brings you and your family moments of joy and connection with family and friends.
While enjoying the break, please remember to stay safe on your travels. A reminder that our school site will be strictly out of bounds these holidays as works will commence over the holiday break.
As always if you live in the local area and notice anything suspicious, can we urge you to call crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Parent Teacher Interviews
We look forward to welcoming parents and carers to the Parent-Teacher Interviews on 26th March in the PAC. Bookings will close on Thursday 21.03.24. This is an opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss a child’s learning and next steps.
Science experiment excitement
Our Year 1 and Year 2 students have been completing many exciting Science experiments this term. Ask your child about their science experiments.
Swimming
Students in Year 1 and 2 have been learning a lot about swimming, bus travel and changing this week during swimming lessons. So many exciting things to learn, including how to make sure we can find our socks again after swimming!
Maths
A number of our P-2 teachers and Education Support Staff were involved in a day-long professional learning about Mathematics. Over the coming term, students will be engaged in ‘Move and Proves’, where they move around the classroom to prove and discuss their findings in Maths. We love Maths at Rochedale South SS.

FROM MRS CANNONS AND THE INCLUSION TEAM
Here is something I read recently that I thought I would share with you all.
Sometimes hearing something like this reminds us about who we are and who we want to be. It is ok to take the time to learn about others around us.
Recently, we have had families celebrate Ramadan. This is an important time, which at times, requires some considerations.
We encourage parents to communicate with class teachers any updated information for your child. Class teachers will respond, communicate and action appropriately.
Have you changed address? Do you have a new phone number? Please share changes and update your information using the QPARENTS app. Parents can also use this app to update medical information.
Shortly, the Administration building will be unavailable due to renovations. Admin is being relocated into the Library during this time. Please check your messages issued via the Schoolzine app, as information will be shared regularly.
NDIS/Support Services on site update- Please communicate with services who visit on site and advise the relocation of Administration. They will need to sign in at the Library during this time. Please also maintain communication about your child’s schedule as events sometimes clash with scheduled appointments.
We welcome external services to access and support your child during school hours (and on site). Our school is permitting services on site from 11:00 am. We understand this is not possible for some services and/or students and will make considerations based on individual student timetables at school. Prior to any visits onsite, Access Agreement Consents must be current and signed by both parents and the service provider. Upon receipt, the Principal can approve these so visits can commence.
Please complete the Access Agreement Consent Form and Consent to Share doc. These can be email to supportservices@rochedalesouthss.eq.edu.au for Principal approval. A parent information Fact sheet is also available.
Save the date- Inclusion Matters Partnering With Parents Workshops
13th May 3:30 – 4:00 pm. Information about the session will be sent out via schoolzine.
Family Connection, Supports and Network Services
Sometimes, we may need to reach out, chat to a friend or find a service who can help. Here at Rochedale South State School, we pride ourselves at stepping in and helping each other out. There are a number of services available to support students and families who are experiencing difficulties at home or school. Please reach out to a service, contact the school or your child’s class teacher. We understand it takes a team and are available to assist in supporting students and families.
Here are some services that can be accessed.

Open a World of Reading
An important aspect of shared reading is the conversation that occurs between the adult and child during the reading. Pausing while reading and taking the time to discuss details in a text can support your child’s oral language development. When you read aloud to your child, they hear and learn lots of new and sophisticated words and sentences they may not hear or use in everyday talk.
In the early years of reading instruction, children engage with different books for different purposes. They need to read decodable texts to develop their word reading skills and they need to read and hear authentic texts to develop strong oral language skills. Authentic texts include picture books, storybooks, information texts and any reading material your child enjoys.
When children are first learning to read, the books they will read independently are designed to improve their ability to decode (decodable texts). For most children, the language used in these books will be far simpler than the language they already understand and use. When your child comes to a word they do not automatically know, you can help them by saying: ‘Say the sounds as you point to the letters. Now, blend the sounds and read the word.’ For example: for the word ‘hen’, point to the letters and provide the sounds, /h/ /e/ /n/, then blend the sounds to read ‘hen’. If your child still has difficulty reading the word, it’s okay to tell them what the word is. Remember, they are still learning about letters and sounds and may need more practise and support.
Did you know we have access to an extensive collection of ebooks and audiobooks, specially chosen for Education Queensland schools? Available in Sora, the student reading app! Children can read independently on their own devices using the Sora app or soraapp.com/library/eduqueenslandau. Download Sora and start reading today! Please ask your child’s teacher for their MIS ID to log-in and follow the process below.
FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER WENDY GROCOTT
What a busy term we are having here in the finance office! We have sent out invoices so far for SRS resources, Instrumental Music, Year 6 Camp, Interschool sport and Swimming for Years 1, 2,4 and 6. I would like to thank all our families for keeping up with this influx and for the payments we have already received. BPoint and the QParents app are proving a very popular way to make these payments quickly and easily.
Please take note of due by dates, for excursions in particular, as we need to advise numbers in advance of the day and can not take late payments. If you ever find that you are struggling to make a payment by the due date, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange a payment plan as we are always happy to help and hate to see the students miss out if finance is the issue.
Wishing all our families a Happy Easter and a safe holiday, see you all next term.

Cross Country Carnival
Well done to all students who participated in our school Cross Country Carnival on Wednesday 6th March. It was so great to see so many students wearing their house colours, cheering each other on, and participating with great energy and enthusiasm. I was especially proud of our Prep and junior school students who for weeks had been learning the course and practising in PE, and on the day put in an amazing effort and performance. We had some close finishes, great times and exciting results to report from the day. 16 students in our 10-12 year age range qualified to the next level and will represent Rochedale South State School at the Logan District Cross Country Carnival early next term. It was also great to see so many parents and family members turn out on the day to cheer on our students. A big thank you to our P&C and Tuckshop for putting on Ice Blocks for all students at the finish line, to Mr Hill for preparing the grounds, and all of our amazing staff who brought the excitement, encouraged, officiated and helped make the day happen. Below is a list of results from the day and a few photo highlights.

Jingeri Families
Harmony Day presented the opportunity to reflect on and appreciate the diversity in our school that brings so much life, colour and learning to our days.
Our family tradition at this time is to celebrate the Christian holiday of Easter, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus. It's a time we meet together with extended family, share food and attend special events to commemorate and celebrate the occasion.
At the same time, many of our school families are celebrating their family tradition of the Islamic period of Ramadan, a time of fasting and feasting, prayer and reflection, and of gathering with family and loved ones. There will also be families who celebrate the Hindu Holi festival, welcoming spring and celebrating new life.
So it's a special time for many of us. These holidays have a number of aspects of celebration in common, such as times for personal reflection and prayer, thinking about new life and opportunities to improve our character and the treatment of those around us. They are times to be self-less and think of others who are less fortunate, to give to charity, to share care for each other, and to aspire to love others better. They are times for families to be together and enjoy meaningful connections over good food!
Whatever you may be celebrating, from the Easter bunny to some of the traditions mentioned here, I hope you all have a happy holiday and look forward to welcoming you all back to Term 2.
Blessings,

Dear Parents and Guardians
I would like to introduce the Rochedale South State School P&C Executive Team:
President: Carolyn Wyszynski
Vice President: Phil Thomson
Treasurer: Rebecca Brennan
Secretary: Sarah Parnell
We have a strong team to bring the best to the students and our school.
I’d like to thank everyone who participated in the Fun Run and Mother’s Day Picture Plates fundraisers already this term. The Fun Run raised $7522 before the company takes their fees which is a great response with only 100 students creating a profile.
We had 91 Picture Plates ordered which have been sent off. The final figure isn’t in yet but the approximate raised is just under $700.
Thank you to the parents who have donated items for the Easter Raffle, tickets are available on Flexischools for $2 each or best deal is 3 tickets for $5. We will also be selling tickets in person but ONLY on Thursday morning at the PAC before the Easter Parade.
We have had busy start to the year and the P&C are greatful for your support.
Coming up next term we have the Mother’s Day stall for the students and we will need volunteers for that so please let us know if you are available. We will also have a Mother’s Day Raffle and later in the term our delicious Pie Drive will return as it was very popular last year.
Have a safe and happy holiday and we will see you you back relaxed and refreshed.
Kind regards
