Our vision: Creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to excel.

Wood_Stacey.jpgJingeri families!

I would like to begin by expressing my gratitude to all of our families through what has been a highly disrupted school term. We recognise that COVID has impacted many of you personally across the last few months and understand the added stress this can bring with it.

We also offer our thoughts to those who may have been impacted by the weather event in Week 7 – whether that be your own home, that of a relative/friend or workplace.

There are many resources provided by the Department of Education which families can access to support mental health and wellbeing conversations in the home. During unpredictable times, I encourage our families to have an open dialogue with their children about strategies to help when we are feeling stressed. These resources are age appropriate and can support parents to step through tricky topics with their children. For families with high school aged children, the site has resources for this age group also. Click here to view what is available.

Wellbeing Strategy – Gratitude

One strategy that can make an impact for ourselves and others is practicing Gratitude. Studies have linked gratitude to increased happiness, stronger relationships, and improved physical health; in recent years, studies on gratitude among youth suggest that it fosters more positive emotions and better attitudes toward school (source).  There are many different ways to support our children to begin to practice gratitude: we can model it, we can ask them who/what they are grateful for, we can start a family ritual such as a gratitude jar, we could engage children in acts of kindness - to name a few ideas! What might be one way you can promote the act of practising gratitude in your household?

School Vision

There are many ways that our school vision, “Creative, resilient, curious, learners empowered to excel” influences the decision-making for our school. As a Performing Arts Excellence school, creativity is embedded within key curriculum areas as well as extra-curricular opportunities. Resilience is fostered through our Positive Behaviour for Learning programs school wide. Encouraging curiosity sparks our learning journey in many classrooms. And quality teaching and learning ensures every child, every day, is empowered to exceed their potential.

Annual Improvement Plan

Our School Vision also forms the purpose statement behind our Annual Improvement Plan (AIP). Each year, schools document and publish their priority areas of focus. This in turn influences how we target our resources in alignment with school improvement. Once our Assistant Regional Director endorses the plan, it will be posted to our School Website. The two priority areas for 2022 are:

  • Level Up!
  • High Expectations

These overarching statements encompass our intention to continually improve student achievement and wellbeing outcomes through high quality implementation of the Australian Curriculum in a supportive, safe learning environment. There are a range of systems, programs and professional learning opportunities that allow us to enact this work. For more detailed information about these priority areas, and to influence the strategic direction of the school, parents are encouraged to join the conversation through our P & C or School Council.

School Governance

At the time of writing this newsletter, we are on the precipice of holding the P & C Annual General Meeting at which time we will receive nominations for the Executive Committee. The AGM date and time were distributed via notes sent home in Week 8, and will be held on:

Monday 28 March, 7pm, Staff Room (Administration Building)

If you are interested in joining our P&C Executive team or our School Council, or would like more information, please get in touch by contacting principal@rochedalesouthss.eq.edu.au.

Welcome New Staff

We welcome our new Head of Department – Curriculum (HOD-C) Jennifer Bampton to our wonderful staffing team. Jennifer comes to us with a wealth of curriculum knowledge and experience. She will be working directly with our teachers and students as part of our leadership team, to continue to shape the direction of our Australian Curriculum implementation.

We also welcome our new Health teacher, Karley Taylor, who will take over from Hannah Owens as she commences her leave in Term 2.

'Empowered to Learn'

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Harmony Day

This year Rochedale South celebrated a whole week of ‘inclusiveness, respect and everyone belonging.’ We were fortunate to have a motivated teaching community who offered our students the chance to engage with some cultural tasks during our lunch breaks: Torres Strait inspired weaving, Chinese Lantern building, and individual class displays to celebrate our classes individual diversity.  Our week was topped with a parade of nations where our students celebrated their heritage by joining in song while circumnavigating our campus.

Our school and community are all the richer for understanding and finding insight into the great diversity that stiches the fabric of our school together to make it a place where we see ‘creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to excel’.

Bullying

Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about bullying. You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens.

If your child talks to you about bullying:

Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation.  After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need to: who, what, where, when.  Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.

  1. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
  2. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem.  While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option.  It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
  3. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. Discuss and practice the High 5 or other strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.
  4. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the deputy principal.
  5. Check in regularly with your child.  Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings.  Your ongoing support is important.

Cross Country – Wednesday March 30

Again echoing the above sentiments, we will be running our Cross Country on Wednesday March 30.  We encourage all of our students to wear team colours and cheer for their house.  Our senior students (Year 3-6) will be commencing races at 9:15am, with the junior (Prep- Year 2) portion of the day commencing at 11:55am. We look forward to seeing our community support our students in their first whole school sporting event for the year.

ANZAC Day March – Monday April 25

We are hoping to continue with the ANZAC day march this year. It will be hosted again at the Springwood Park located on Cinderella Avenue with marshalling at the top of Fitzroy Street.  If you would like to attend, an EOI will be sent home in the first week of Term 2 to register your attendance, which is vitally important so that we can provide attendance to the Tri-Services League.  Our choir has been honoured and invited to sing the Australian & New Zealand National Anthem. We look forward to gathering as a community to commemorate our ANZACs.

Community Connection

Rochedale South Police Beat

This Friday we had Senior Constable Tom Lyons and Senior Constable Vicki Cooper visit the school and join in on our school lunch time frivolities.  You may encounter both Senior Constables in your travels around Rochedale South and we thank them for their continued direction in keeping our community safe.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS PREP TO YEAR 6 – TUESDAY APRIL 26

Our Parent-Teacher Interviews evening is fast approaching on Tuesday April 26 in Term 2, with first interviews commencing at 3.15pm and final interviews at 7.45pm.

This interview allows teacher(s) and parents, the opportunity to discuss your child’s learning, their progression, what they are individually working toward and how they can be supported both at school and at home.  Take this opportunity, prior to the interview, to speak with your child on how they believe they’re succeeding at school.

The format for our interviews is face to face and will be held in the Performing Arts Centre. Two parent/carers can attend at one time after a booking has been made.

**Please note for PH parents: Mrs. Hollywood will be conducting her interviews across the entire week April 26-29. Mrs. Deb Hollywood will be connecting with parents to co-ordinate these times across the week

PREP K, B, M - YEAR 6 Interview Information

Appointments are in 15 minute timeslots which allows 10 minutes for the interview and then time for the teacher to get things ready for the next interview and the parent to move to the next interview if you have one. A small bell will be rung at the end of the 10 minutes to indicate the time to conclude the discussion. Teachers also have a meal break from 5.30pm to 6.00pm. We really do appreciate everyone's assistance in keeping sharply to the times and respecting the current interviews taking place. Please wait in the designated class area prior to your allocated timeslot, to allow privacy of conversations taking place in interviews.  This will be annotated on a mud map on arrival.

Miss Harvey and Mr Charles will also be on hand if you have any broader school questions you would like to discuss.

BOOKING PROCESS: The bookings will open online on WEDNESDAY 30 March.

This link will be provided on WEDNESDAY 30 MARCH via SZapp. Please ensure you provide us with a contact phone number when you complete the booking.

SZapp tile – This will again be used to easily book an interview for all classes except Prep H.

For a self-help guide here is the link:

Parent Booking Guide:  https://rochsoutss.schoolzineplus.com/sk-booking-guide

For parents with more than one child, please follow the same process for each child. If you have any questions or concerns about booking your interview – please contact the office.

IMPORTANT – NO appointments can be made after 2.00pm on Thursday April 21. This is to enable teachers to have ample notice of their appointment schedule and to prepare for their interviews over the following days.

If you are unable to access the Internet or the SZapp, please call Mrs Langhorne at the office on 3340-0777 on Thursday 31 March.

Bump It Up Walls – High Impact Teaching Strategy

Did you know that all students have a bump it up wall in their class room? Bump-it-up walls are a way of making learning progression visible. They are a way of demonstrating how students can strive to create an assessment at a higher level. Thank you Mrs. Sam Golding and Mrs. Briony Sarri for sharing your fantastic bump it up walls.

Best Beginnings Workshops for Prep Parents

A very big thank you to all the parents who attended our workshops last week in our Prep classes and online via TEAMS. These sessions were interactive and built the connection between home and school. Teachers did an excellent job connecting with parents around the practicalities of supporting literacy learning in the home – parents left feeling empowered to support their students to excel! If you have any questions about your child’s learning, please contact your teacher and/or book your teacher parent interview. Thank you to Liz Black, Jodie Mills, Deb Hollywood and Kristen Doyle for their ongoing passion and commitment to our Early years students.

Prep – Year 2 Easter Parade Friday April 1

Hop into Easter!

All our Prep, Year One and Two students and their guardian/parent are invited to join in our Easter celebrations at our Easter Parade

on

Friday 1 April at 9:15 – 10:15am in the PAC.

Part of the Easter fun is the making and wearing of Easter Bonnets. Easter Bonnets are made by parents and children at home and brought to school on the morning of the Easter Parade.

Tickets for the P&C Raffle will be on sale before commencing and will be drawn during the parade. To ensure all attendees can clearly see their children’s bonnets on full display, we ask that only one family member per child comes along to this event. COVID policy has allowed restrictions to ease, however, if you or your child are displaying any COVID-19 symptoms, please do not attend. The health, safety and wellbeing of children, families, educators and staff of early childhood education and care services continues to be our key focus.

Building Capability

At Rochedale South SS, we are committed to building capability of teachers and support staff so that “Every Student Succeeds.” This week, a number of staff attended a full day training of PLD – which is a Systematic Synthetics program being rolled out in the early years classes. Our school is committed to improving our practice with a particular focus on reading comprehension. This links to our AIP of Levelling up and High Expectations. Staff meetings on Tuesday’s all align with our school’s vision and AIP.

Dear families

Inclusion

Harmony Day March 21st was an insight into the incredible school we have and the people that make this a great school. All students were engaged in a range of learning opportunities and walked the school to see how amazing each and every one of us are. A big thank you to the teachers who organised this even and to the students who contributed to the wonderful displays.  A big thank you to our parents who supported students with cultural dress and/or outfits inclusive of wearing orange for the celebration.

Building Friendships.

Schools provide opportunities for Building Friendships. Every day counts and just ‘being there’ does not always foster partnerships and friendships. Rochedale South State School understands that it is important to provide targeted meaningful opportunities where students can learn about each other, build social skills and share their own uniqueness, so others can see what wonderful gifts we all have. This includes all students and staff. Our staff are incredibly talented and quite often share their skills (other than teaching) with our students and colleagues. Participation in the Lunch Time Clubs has grown and is testament to the dedication and passion of the teaching staff.

Health, Medication and Post Care Requirements for our students.

Any student who requires medication to be administered at school, we request parents and carers to contact the school. Click here for the form that gives authority for the office staff to administer medication. All medication must have a label with the child's name and dosage to administer.

If your child has an injury or medical condition, please advise the office immediately so our records can be updated. This ensures the appropriate adjustments, inclusive of a Medical Action Plan, can be created and implemented. At times, a student may require post care medical attention e.g broken arm, moon boot or crutches, adjustments can be made during this time. Please advise the class teacher or the office staff.

We believe in the success and wellbeing for all in an inclusive and equitable environment.

NCCD- National Consistent Collection of Data.

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) gives Australian schools, parents, guardians and carers, education authorities and the community information about the number of students with disability in schools and the adjustments they receive. The Australian Education Regulation 2013 requires all schools to report the data collected for the NCCD to the Australian Government on an annual basis. Information will be shared about the 2022 process as we approach closer to the data collection period. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Brigette CANNONS, Head of Inclusive Education.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Students in Year 3 and Year 5 will be participating in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in May this year. Students in Year 5 will complete reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy components online. Students in Year 3 will complete reading, language conventions and numeracy online and will complete the writing component on paper.

NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents and carers to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. NAPLAN online is a tailored test that adapts to student responses, providing better assessment and more precise results. Please find attached information for parents and carers about the program:

  1. NAPLAN Online- information for parents and carers.
NAPLAN Online- information for parents and carers- simplified English.
  2. ACARA infographic: information on how student personal data is collected and protected.
  1. The ACARA privacy notice.

To ensure that all students have the opportunity to become familiar with the intended format of the program, students will have opportunities to experience a practice test environment with their classroom teacher. This will mean that students learn how to move through the online environment, use tools on the screen and see what the screen will look like on the day. No results are collected from these practice tests.

Absences

Students are considered absent for test purposes in the following instances:

  • They did not sit the tests because they were not present at school when the test was administered.
  • They were unable to sit the test as a result of an accident or mishap.
  • They were at school but were too ill to participate.

All students who are absent on the day of the test but who return to school within the week scheduled for NAPLAN testing are encouraged to participate in the tests.

Withdrawals

NAPLAN tests are a routine part of the school calendar. However, students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/carer if there are religious beliefs or philosophical objections to testing. This is a matter for consideration by individual parents/carers in consultation with the school. A formal application in the manner specified by the relevant test administration authority (TAA).

If you have any questions around NAPLAN, please speak with the Deputy Principal, Craig Charles, on 3340 0777.

Kind regards,

Jennifer Bampton

Head of Department - Curriculum

Dear parent/carers

Recently we sent out statements to our families and some of you have reached out for some clarification as to why. Let me tell you a little about statements as they can be confusing.

A statement of account is different to an invoice as it is an overall picture of what you owe rather than being for one particular item. It will usually list each of your children and which invoices are still open, how much the invoice was originally and how much is still outstanding. Sometimes they will even show a negative figure indicating that you have a credit on your account either from an over payment or a refund.

A statement acts as a reminder for an invoice you may have forgotten, or perhaps not even received, as sometimes can happen when we send out bulk ones. It can also be a great way to keep track of where you are up to with payment plans, to know how much you have left to go.

Remember that a Statement is a great way to track how your account is going, particularly if you are on a payment plan, it is not a new invoice.

How to read your Statement of Account

If you have an invoice to pay the amount will be shown as a positive figure as per the example below.

Account_in_debit_1.png

If you have a credit on your account either from an overpayment or a refund, for example, it will appear on your statement as a negative figure as per this example.

Account_in_Credit_example.png

If you do have a negative figure it means that you have money on your account that could be applied to any future invoices that are sent out. Please contact the Business Manager to have that credit applied to the next invoice or part thereof. Please do not pay this amount again.

As always if you have any questions or concerns about your account please give me a call.

CHAPPY CHAT

Earlier this month I was seconded to work for 2 days in the flood evacuation centre at Chandler – offering support to the guests there who have been impacted by flooding.  The centre closes today and all guests have been offered options of safe housing as they start to rebuild after this crisis.  It was incredible watching the harmony of the government and non-government organisations work together to help these people in great need.  There are good people in our communities – doing good things to help others, and to restore equity and dignity to those on the margins. It was wonderful to be part of it.

Our next tip about RESILIENCE, gleaned from the work of Maggie Dent in her booklet Building Children’s Resilience - One building block at a time, is the impact of safe and nurturing care within the circle of family.

You are teaching one of the few human beings who will be entirely entrusted to you, how to laugh, learn and love people.  There is nothing more worthwhile that you will ever do. Love, Laughter and Parenting (Biddolph:2001)

Here’s some things you can do to support a nurturing family circle:

  • Join a playful, supportive community – like playgroups, walking groups, playground groups
  • Read to your children – visit the library together, choose picture books and snuggle together as you read
  • Respect your child, infant or toddler, as worthy people. Don’t treat them as objects or cute but empty headed – they don’t want to be manipulated but listened to and respect – just like you do
  • Model the behaviour you expect to see
  • Avoid screens for children under 5, especially for children under 2, encourage healthy human interactions when playing with simply toys (not too many), outdoors and in shared play situations.
  • Avoid overscheduling your child’s free time – some boredom is important so that children learn how to self sooth and find things to do without being so time managed
