FROM THE PRINCIPAL STACEY WOOD
Our vision: Creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to excel.
It was fantastic to see so many families in attendance to celebrate our Academic Awardees for Semester 1 2022. On the day, I shared words about excellence. An Awards Assembly is specifically to celebrate our students who have demonstrated excellence in their academic achievements – these students have worked hard and their strengths are worthy of pride and acknowledgement! We congratulate these students on their achievements and encourage them to keep up the momentum in Semester 2.
However, excellence comes in many forms and we each excel in different areas. We know that many students work extremely hard to achieve a C. Or that some learning areas might come more easily to some of us than to others. Diversity in our learners is what makes our school all the richer.
When our school vision refers to our learners being “empowered to excel”, we are not referring solely to academic excellence. We are referring to giving each individual a strong platform to shine in their own way. This platform has a foundation in literacy, numeracy and thinking skills – as well as developing our social and personal capabilities.
When we hold high aspirations for every student to exceed their potential, and take active steps to support them in their learning journey, we meet our vision to empower students to excel.

'Empowered to Learn'
As parents we often find it near impossible to slow down our days and minutes to focus on the great learning and achievement of our students in the everyday. In a fortnights time we will be celebrating our students learning, so far, and I encourage each of our families to engage with our teaching team, to hear the many successes and challenges our students. I look forward to connecting with our many families in the upcoming student led conferences, and celebrating the many achievements of our young people.
Winter Uniform
With the end of appearing these past week/s it is timely to remind families that our school has a P&C endorsed Dress Code. In addition to our summer uniform, students are allowed to wear:
Green track pants
- Navy blue fleecy or zip up jacket (sew on badges also available from uniform shop)
- Bottle Green or Navy Blue plain or ribbed tights may also be worn under shorts.
Tights or track pants in any other colour are not acceptable, nor are jeans. Jumpers of varying colours are also not allowed. We would appreciate if you can please ensure your children are dressed appropriately in accordance with our School Uniform Policy.
The coffers of our lost property have reached their capacity and over the coming weeks after school we invite parents to review our lost property on the front lawn prior to the end of day. I would also use this time to remind families that the proactive naming of these items will help this process in the year to come.

Making an Impact with 'The Impact Centre'
Students in the upper school, in Years' 4, 5 and 6, have been offered the opportunity to engage with the Impact Centre. Students will be engaging in this program once a week for an hour, which will commence this coming week, facilitated by passionate teachers online.
Critical thinking is a vital and foundational 21st century skill. It facilitates the development of other 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, empathy, creative thinking and more.
Participation in our Critical Thinking Series ensures that your students learn to explain and justify their thinking at an advanced level. They also develop important virtues such as the ability to predict, analyse and evaluate other points of view, and the humility to change their view based on the quality of reasons and evidence offered by others.
The following programs have been co-designed with experts in the field. Your students' critical thinking skills will be explicitly developed, and enhanced through the intersection of critical thinking with media literacy, entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy.

Ekka Meal Deal Thank You -
Our school operates because of the hard work and effort put in by many dedicated parents and workers of our Parents and Citizens Association at Rochedale South. This week our school was able to celebrate this year's Royal Show at our school with the offer of an Ekka Meal Deal. Thank you to all of the volunteers; Danara Blom, Louise Patterson, Kylie Taipaleti, Melanie Johnson and espcially Mel Tracey and Alina Orams, who brought some of the Ekka magic to our doorstep.
Stop-Drop-Go
The Stop-Drop-Go is there for everyone’s convenience but becomes unmanageable if cars are left parked in the zone. School staff supervise this area after school to ensure our students are safe as they leave school when waiting for pick up. However it is not the school’s responsibility to manage the “STOP, DROP GO” zone. School staff do not have any authority over road users.
Police and Local Law Officers have informed me that there will also be regular patrols to ensure drivers are adhering to the road rules. It is the responsibility of the driver of a vehicle to be aware of the Queensland Traffic Act and to drive and use the roads appropriately.
There is no one in our school that would not agree that the safety of our school’s children is of the highest priority and making our “STOP, DROP GO” work properly will add to a safe environment for all. Some points to ensure you follow are listed below.
If there is no space available in the “STOP, DROP GO”, zone you need to move on (go around the block) or find another place to park.
- Under no circumstances do you park across the school driveways or any other driveway. The school driveways must be left clear for disability access, staff access, school service providers and emergency services.
- Always move as far forward as possible in the “STOP, DROP GO Zone to enable effective and safe use of the zone. This may mean you and your children need to walk a little further.
- Never leave your car parked in the “STOP, DROP GO" Zone during operation hours. The zone operates from 7am to 9am and 2pm – 4pm on School Days.
- If you are a pedestrian, set the example to your children as well as respect road users by using our designated crossing areas.
- Above all be patient and respectful, our children’s safety depends on you. Remember children learn by your example.
Thank you to Logan City Council and Parents in keeping our Stop, Drop and Go a safe place for our families.
Yours in Education,
Craig Charles

Book Week is almost here!
Remember to dress up as your favourite book character or topic from a non-fiction book on Wednesday 24th of August and bring along your book to share. Remember, Book Week does not need a bought or fancy costume. Think of simple ways you can show your love, respect or interest in a book – it doesn’t need to be complicated. This year’s theme is: Dreaming with eyes open…
Book Week is also a great time to remind ourselves about the joy of reading and think about the role of books in our homes. As students develop, their reading choices can change and we may need to offer them chapter books, novels, magazines, information texts and a range of different reading material to keep them interested. Reading to children throughout primary school is also a fabulous way to open the door to fascinating, intriguing and fun books children cannot yet read themselves. Remember that Logan City Council Libraries are free and offer a huge range of materials for every reader.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge will conclude at the end of book week on Friday 26th August. Please return your forms to your teacher.
Rochedale South State School learners are thinkers!
Ask your child about their learning:
- What are you learning at school (in English or Maths or Science) at the moment?
- How are you doing?
- How do know (how you are doing)?
- What are you working on to improve / do better?
- What do you do if you need help? How can I help you?
DISTRICT ATHLETICS
Well done to all of our students who competed in the Logan District Athletics Carnival at Sheldon College on Wednesday 2nd August. We had 18 students in the 10-12yr age range compete in track and field events across the day and all students competed with excellent effort in all their events and did our school extremely proud. There was an incredible level of team spirit I noticed in our group this year with a lot of our students super keen to move around to different events throughout the day and even stay back after their events to loudly cheer on, encourage and support their fellow RSSS teammates in competition, even for students not in their age group. It was so nice to see that level of school spirit on display.
A few great results to report - A big congratulations to Hendrix Seipel who came 2nd in the 11yr Boys Long Jump and 3rd in the 100m Sprint. A big congratulations also to Bella Saylor who came 3rd in the 12yr Girls Shot Put. Special mention and well done to students who showed excellent commitment and enthusiasm in showing up to our morning training sessions before school the week before the carnival to train for their events. A big thank you to our amazing Teacher Aide Ms Podmore who was our Team Manager for the carnival and did a wonderful job marshalling our students to all of their events and took some great photos of our students in action. Thank you to all parents who provided transport for students and for supporting our students on the day.

We had the basketball and tennis courts cleaned last week in preparation for the basketball competition and think they have come up a treat, lets hope the rain stays away and we can get a decent season in!
Statements sent home this week
As we approach midterm, we will email statements home this week as a reminder of what, if any, fees are still outstanding for the year. We do ask that all Student Resource Scheme payments be finalised by end of this term so that we can finalise our spending for the year, to ensure the students get the most out of the resources. This includes all Laptop SRS and Consumable SRS, unless an agreed payment plan is in place.

CHAPPY CHAT
Next up regarding RESILIENCE…. gleaned from the work of Maggie Dent in her booklet Building Children’s Resilience - One building block at a time, is the impact of meaningful involvement with positive adults..
At school, your child interacts with multiple adults on a daily basis who are safe and positive role models. But it’s also important to nurture meaningful involvement with positive adults outside of the school environment. Children need adult role models who will spend time with them, affirm and encourage them, challenge them to grow and improve themselves, adults who will be part of the ‘village’ that raises your child. These adults will be people who are genuinely interested in who your child is, will be a good listener, caring and empathetic, and someone your child enjoys being with.
You may not have a close support network of adults in your own life but there are things you can do to build relationships with other adults who can be a positive influence in your child’s life:
- Participation in a local sporting club, scouts or similar, with coaches who encourage and build confidence
- Attending a local faith community gathering, local church or mosque, and participating in the children’s programs (youth groups, Sunday school, Quran class)
- Meeting other parents at the park – being intentional about talking with each other’s children, valuing their sharing and asking about things that interest them
- Special visits with relatives who dedicate time to being with your child – reading them a story, playing together outside, gardening or going for a walk together.
*it is recommended confirming that any adult facilitating a children’s activity is a blue card holder and is approved to work with children.

This week we successfully ran the Ekka meal deal through our Tuckshop and it was a HUGE success, with over 220 orders placed! We could not have run such an amazing day of tasty food for the children without our wonderful Tuckshop staff and our super team of volunteers.
Ahead of us this term is the Father’s Day stall, and we are still chasing volunteers to join us and help make it as big a success as our Mother’s Day stall earlier in the year! Our Father’s Day Stall will be held on Monday 29 August and Tuesday 30 August. We have gifts for Dad’s , Granddad, Grandparents, Grandpa, Pop, and unisex gifts ranging from $1.00 up to $10.00. Raffle tickets will also be on sale with first prize being a Wonderboom speaker, second prize a Brisbane Lions Packand, third prize is a family pass to the Gingerbread Factory. Tickets will be $1.00.
All classes will have a chance to visit the stall over these two days, and a timetable will be sent home with students shortly.
We are also hopeful to get a disco organised for Term 4, and would be very grateful for any and all help from our wonderful community.
As always, we extend a warm welcome for more amazing members for our P&C! Meetings are monthly and only an hour of parents time, and it’s a great way to keep in the know, and to be actively involved in changes and events happening around the school.
I personally look forward to meeting more of our beautiful community as the year progresses, and hope to see more faces around our school as our future events unfold.
All classes will have a chance to visit the stall over these two days, and a timetable will be sent home with students shortly.
