FROM THE PRINCIPAL STACEY WOOD
Our vision: Creative, resilient, curious learners empowered to excel.
Jingeri families!
What an incredible Semester of teaching and learning we have had! Students should be exceedingly proud of their efforts and enjoy a well-deserved break these next two weeks.
We thank our P and C for supporting our school as we rebuild our positive learning community – with lots of fun events across the term! The goggles from my sliming and my crown from Under 8’s Day are proudly displayed on my office wall!
We congratulate YMCA on their success as our ongoing OSHC provider. We value the positive partnership we have developed with YMCA over the years and are grateful to have the opportunity to continue working together in support of our families.
Our facilities improvements have been running successfully, with students and staff vacating blocks in preparation for scheduled holiday works. The first of two new buildings has been a fantastic upgrade; we look forward to installation of the second building and an improved Prep playground over the coming months.
We encourage all families to enjoy the next two weeks as some down time from the busy routines during the term. Stay safe and take care over the break. We look forward to seeing you return fresh and ready for learning in Term 3.

'Empowered to Learn'

This past fortnight has been a hive of activity at our school. Students have been astute athletes at our Athletics Carnival, celebrated the successful conclusion of Interschool Sport and rounded out our Semester One with the very successful Under 8s Day - You, Me and our Community.
With the conclusion of this term, I am preparing to welcome my third child into the world. Excitedly, we are awaiting their arrival. I will be on personal leave in the first fortnight of Term 3 and thank Mrs Brigette Cannons for taking on the responsibilities of Deputy Principal in my absence.
Staffing
As the Deputy Principal I get the privledge of working alongside many staff members at Rochedale South. What you may not know is the quality of staff that we attract and retain in our community. At this half year juncture I'd like to thank our dedecated staff who, daily take their responsibility of working at our school as a calling and see this work as a profession, and not just a job. This view is what drives the heart of our community to value each child and curate challenging and memorable learning experiances at Rochedale South.
With this is mind I'd like to thank Mrs Brianna Skrzpinski for her contributions this past year. Mrs S has worked in aligning our pedagogy and engagement throughout the school. Her impact in engaging our students and families has been notable and we wish her all the very best in her next challenges ahead. On behalf of the staff body and community, we wish you well over the school break and hope you enjoy well deserved time with family.
Upcoming Events
PBL rewards days will be celebrated across our school on Friday 28 July. Students will be recieving their invitations to the various rewards across the school this Friday and we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the great Learners that we have at Rochedale South. This semester students who have been inducted into the plus 50 Cal Club will have a range of choices in their rewards day.
Semester reports
School reports will be sent home on Friday June 23 this semester. Teachers have done a thorough job with report writing and providing feedback to our students. Our students have engaged deeply with the units this term and have enhanced their work by utilising the third teacher space through each classes bump it up walls. Our Leadership Team have been reading and reviewing reports over this last week which has highlighted the depth and enjoyment our students have experienced in this full term of school.
Our reporting for Semester One has been a cause for celebration as well as looking at our longitudinal growth over the past four years. I will be sharing some more insights into the reporting period data at the commencement of Term 3.
Can I congratulate our students, parents, teachers and staff on seeing our students learning, connection to the work, and articulating their next best learning moves, as being 'the work'.
School Holidays
This afternoon we will be demarking the end of Semester One and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Over the school holidays no one can access the school grounds. This is due to the site works commencing across the school grounds. We ask families to be vigilent in keeping our school safe and if you see anything suspicious, please don't attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number on 131788. The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in Queensland schools. Let's work together to help create a safer school community
Community Connection
Under 8s Day - Wrap Up
We are thrilled to celebrate the tremendous success of our Under 8s day, themed "PLAY - you, me, and the community." It was a day filled with joy, laughter, and a strong sense of togetherness. Families came together to emphasise the importance of early childhood and the power of play in our lives.
The theme perfectly captured the essence of the event, highlighting the role of play in fostering connections and nurturing relationships within the community. Children of all ages delighted in the antics of Johnny the Jester, from face painting to a plethora of craft hosted by our school and wider community, outdoor games, stimulating their imagination and creativity. It was heartwarming to see parents and community members actively participating and embracing their inner child.
We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to this memorable day, including our community partners and volunteers. Can I particularly thank our external community partners; Our local Police Officers, QFES, Rochedale State High Schools Agriculture program, Norma Mae Honey, Coral Watch, Grasshopper Soccer, First 5 Forever, Kirstie Harris, Coles Rochedale, Bunnings, Children of Destiny and Perfect Grind your support engaged our learners and community to make the day a true celebration. Additionally our P and C president, Carolyn Wyszynski and volunteers, our dedicated staff in their preparations and running of the day, and all of our ancillary staff whose combined efforts made the day possible. Their support exemplified the power of community spirit in shaping the lives of our children. Let us carry the spirit of play forward, nurturing it in our homes and communities, as we create a brighter future for our children through the joys of play.

Craig Charles

Reporting Information
Prep students will only receive a report mark for English, Mathematics and Science. The other areas of learning will be made at the end of Semester Two. This allows all our students to demonstrate their abilities across the year.
For all other year levels, as The Arts is a banded subject, which means the content taught is across a number of years, the school has decided to provide formal achievements for Art and Music at the end of the year. This follows the P-12 CARF guidelines, which is the Queensland’s curriculum, assessment reporting framework.
Under 8s Day - Thank you
While I wasn’t there on the day to enjoy the festivities, I wanted to send out a huge thank you to the community, including the P & C, and an enormous appreciation to the exuberant Mr Charles, our wonderful Chaplain Cassie Love and our behind-the-scenes extraordinaire, Sarah Shannon (Parent Liaison Officer) for making Under 8s day a really special day.
“My favourite part was doing the Grasshopper soccer” Mateo in 1G
“I loved playing Jenga” Saideep in 1G
“The best part of Under 8s day was eating two snow cones!” Axel in 1G
“ The fairy floss was my highlight and of course the face painting.” Isla in 1G
Prep Parents of 2024
In Term Three, the leadership team will be hosting our Prep 2024 interviews. These interviews are an opportunity to meet our future preps, get to know families and begin to co-construct transition plans. This year we have increased our interview time so that we can address all concerns and provide the support parents need. Our school puts in a lot of time and resources into transitions as we know navigating transitions in the early years is crucial to a child’s healthy development and wellbeing and can lay the foundation for a future of learning and better outcomes.
If you are in catchment, have a child turning 5 on or before June 31st 2024, please contact the school for an enrolment pack.
Key date for transition includes our Prep Orientation, which will be held in Term 4. This event will be held on Thursday 12th of October from 915 -11am. All parents and Prep 2024 students are required to participate this morning.
2F Parents
Mrs Sarah Ford will be taking long service leave for the first two weeks of Term Three, Monday 10th July – 21st July. Mrs Sarah Ford will be having a trip of life time, flying to Europe, and spending time with her family in Scotland. We all wish Mrs Sarah Ford a safe and happy holiday.
Mrs Carlie Tedford who has been a long-standing relief teacher at our school, will be teaching 2F. Mrs Tedford is excited to be on 2F and has already met with Sarah Ford for a thorough handover. Please make Mrs Carlie Tedford feel welcome.
Can I please ask that student communication over these two weeks to be directed to myself on aharv159@eq.edu.au I will provide updates for Ms Carlie Tedford with any needed information.
Fire Incursion
In the first week, the Year One team will be hosting the Fire Fighters for an incursion. This event will be held on Thursday 13th July at 1145am.

Lifelong learners
It has been an amazing term at Rochedale South State School and our students have engaged in and created a range of curriculum tasks. As we head into the holidays, students continue to be lifelong learners through a range of activities they can do at home with parents / carers:
- Cooking – reading, sequencing, temperature, time, sorting, measuring
- Reading books together – comprehension, speaking, listening
- Playing outdoors – social skills, problem solving, movement skills, design skills,
- Art & Craft – reading, measuring, patterns, colour, design
- Walk to the park – observation of weather, nature, movement skills, time, distance
One of the most important things families can engage in over the holidays is a rich variety of activities and the family talk that goes alongside these activities. Oral language and engaging in conversations are very important for all children. So, talk, talk, talk your way through the holiday fun!
Book Week
Book Week will be in Week 7 of Term 3. See below for the theme this year:
The Premier’s Reading Challenge will conclude at the end of Book Week in Term 2, Week 7. So, keep reading through the holidays and into next term! Keep adding your books to your record and watch as you get closer to your goal! If you are looking for a new Premier’s Reading Challenge record, these can be found at: https://readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au/register/Documents/school-reader-record-form.pdf
Book suggestions can be found at: https://readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au/register/Documents/school-reader-record-form.pdf
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN individual student report provided later in the year will be changing. There will now be 4 proficiency levels to indicate student achievement:
- Exceeding: The student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: The student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: The student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: The student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
This reporting replaces the previous numerical NAPLAN reporting bands and national minimum standards. Parents and carers of students in Year 3 and 5 can read about these changes here:

FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER WENDY GROCOTT
The first of our new blocks are finished and the students have joyfully moved in. The second instalment of this project is commencing today, with the removal of the old demountable buildings happening tomorrow. Fencing has also been erected around our Year 3 block in preparation for its roof replacement, also starting tomorrow.

It’s a timely reminder to all of our community that our school grounds will be closed to everyone but the contractors for the duration of the holidays, to ensure the safety of everyone. When we return, we should all see a second new building standing in the place of our old music block, we can hardly wait!
We also now have plans underway to replace the Prep playground that was removed for this build, it should be installed during the September holidays creating an exciting new play space for our Preppies.
Wishing all of our families a restful break, stay safe and warm, see you in Term 3 for more fun!

CHAPPY CHAT
Today was the final session of our Gift of Gallang program. This has been an incredible offering for our ASTI students and has enriched their understanding of culture, connection to one another and knowledge of first nations history. We have learnt from Elders, Uncle Val and Aunty Rhonda, used artefacts and learnt to regulate our emotions...I say 'we' because I've been privileged to be part of the group this term. Aunty Jess Skeen-McKinnon and Uncle Josh Skeen have been our guides throughout the term and we have been so grateful for their input and mentoring. Our takeaway from the program is "I matter, you matter, we matter". Together we can support one another.

Fundraising for Chaplaincy
As you know our Chaplaincy service is part government funded, part community funded. This year, instead of holding our own fundraising events we are partnering with P&C for all large scale, out of school hours events. P&C will gift back to Chaplaincy 10% of profits from all large scale events where a chappy supporter is on the committee. If you would like to support our service by representing Chaplaincy on a P&C fundraising event sub-committee please let me know. In term 3 P&C will be hosting a colour run - I encourage you all to support this fantastic family event!
EOFY End of Financial Year Giving
Please consider a donation to Chaplaincy in your EOFY tax deductable donations.
https://www.suqld.org.au/donate/rochedale-south-ss-chaplaincy-tax-deductible/
Please use the above link to make a one off donation, or to sign up as a monthly donor...woud you consider giving the 'cost of a cuppa' to Chaplaincy? $5 a week becomes $20 a month becomes $240 a year. $240 allows one child to receive pastoral care through our Chaplaincy service for 12 months! The same level of support in the private sector is around $180 an hour. A little goes a long way when you support your local Chappy!
Thank you for your support this term! We've celebrated so much - Chappy Week, Under 8s, and there's more to come. In the meantime, enjoy a well deserved break and look forward to hearing how you spent the holidays on your return to Term 3.
Blessings,
Cassie Love

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Well done to all students who participated in our school Athletics Carnival days in Week 8 of Term 2. It was great to see so many students in their house colours competing with lots of energy, effort and enthusiasm. At the Senior Carnival on the Wednesday, we had some excellent results with 20 students qualifying through to the next level. These students will now represent our school at the District Athletics Carnival next term. We also had an exciting and unprecedented result, a tie for the Senior trophy, with Logan and Cunningham both ending up on exactly 489 points. It was so nice to see the surprise and excitement of the students and of the winning house captains with the unexpected result, with the captains cheerfully sharing the rare moment of holding up of the Trophy together (see photos below). On the Thursday, the Juniors were at it, competing in their Track and Field events. It was so great to see them in action, displaying all they had learnt in their Athletics Unit in PE throughout Term 2. There were some very close and exciting 50m Sprint Finals to finish the carnival, with Oxley finishing as the winning house of the Junior Carnival, a nice and rare way to end the carnival, with all houses having lifted a trophy across the two days. Below is a full list of results from across the two days of competition. A big thank you to all of our amazing Teachers and Teacher Aides who officiated and scored events across the two days, to Mr Hill for preparation of the grounds, and to parents and family members who came out to support the students.

INTERSCHOOL SPORT - Season Wrap
SOCCER
A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the Junior A and Senior A Soccer Teams who finished the season as Logan District Premiers! On Friday 9th June at Usher Park, the Juniors played their Grand Final against Groves CC. The boys played with great focus, team spirit and determination. Elama Sekona captained the team from centre back, while Paleti Taipaleti ran lots of metres in midfield. The only goal of the game came from one of our little Year 4 students, Eli Storta, and the boys hung on to the lead through some nervy moments to clinch a memorable 1-0 win. The Senior Grand Final was also played against Groves CC. Kobi Robinson captained the team so well from the centre of midfield. Goalkeeper Trey Vanderwilt put in a player of the match performance making some crucial early saves and distributing well from the box. Similar to the Junior Final, our opening goal came from one of our younger students, Devere Hinds with a great run and shot on goal to put us one ahead. Miller Hicks got our second goal off a perfectly crossed corner whipped in by our captain, Kobi. The boys hung on for a 2-0 win, with both RSSS teams conceding no goals in their finals, a huge effort by our defenders and goalkeepers. This is the first time our school has won the soccer premiership in both age divisions in the one year. Congratulations to our students on this significant achievement and on how they represented their school all season with excellent sportsmanship, always finishing games by cheering the opposition, shaking hands and thanking referees and our bus drivers on Fridays.
Well done to the Junior B and Senior B Soccer teams who both made B Division District Grand Finals. These teams, despite a slow start showed much progress and improvement, picking up more points and wins in the second half of the season. Both teams lost to Chatswood Hills in their Finals, with only one goal the difference in the Senior B Grand Final. Both teams should be very proud of the season they had, of their development as players and as a team, and in making Grand Finals for their divisions. A big thank you to Mr Hogan who coached and trained these students throughout the season, managed them on Fridays and refereed games, and to all parents and family who came out and supported these teams on Fridays. Thank you also to Slacks Creek Football Club who allowed us to use two of their fields every Friday as our home venue for the competition. Our school is so appreciative of your support of junior grassroots soccer through Friday Interschool sport.

GIRLS TOUCH
Congratulations to our Rochedale South Girls Touch Football teams. Our Junior Team, which struggled for numbers during our sign-on weeks and pre-season trials, surprised us in the first few rounds winning all of their opening games of Term 1. The Juniors went on to finish the fixture season in second place, drawing only two games and winning all the rest. The Juniors played Crestmead in their District Grand Final. An early try from Lila Barber put the girls one try up early in the match. Crestmead hit back with a try and the game finished 1-1 after normal time. The Final went to an extra-time drop-off with both teams having to go down one player every minute. With only three players per team out on the field, (ours- Lila, Isabella, Georgia) Crestmead got the winning try to finish as Premiers. Well done to our girls and the effort they put in this season and on this great achievement of finishing 2nd in the District.
The Senior Girls Touch team finished 4th on the ladder and played in a 3rd place match in the finals round week, a game that they won to clinch 3rd place. Standout Senior girls were said to have been Sasha Huang, Meleane Sekona and Izzy Stein. Well done Seniors on a great season. A big thank you to Mrs Owens and Mr Besse who trained these Girls Touch teams on Mondays and Thursdays this semester - a big reason why these teams were so successful, and to Mrs Devery and Mrs Podmore who helped manage the teams on Fridays throughout the season.
