'Empowered to Learn'

At Rochedale South, the teaching and learning that happen every day are truly remarkable. Our dedicated staff and engaged students create a vibrant and enriching educational environment. Although our school works have been delayed this term, we are pleased to share that progress has been expedited over the past few weeks. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to our school site next term with new roofs and future proofed facilities. This term, our students have had amazing opportunities to engage in learning and participate in various school events, including First Nations Excursions, Sorry Day, athletics carnivals, Year 6 camp, science excursions, Chappy Week and high school extension programs. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our community for being the heart of our school, helping our students thrive each and every day.
We have several important staff updates to share with you: We are delighted to welcome back long-term staff member Rebecca Marken as our LOTE teacher for Chinese, following her rewarding time spent with her young one. Sadly, Mrs. Helen Hudson will not be returning this year; we wish her well and thank her for her hard work. Mrs. Melanie Playle, who has taken on the contract for 6O, will continue after Mrs. Oldbury's return in Week One next term, starting Term 3 with class 3H, with Mrs. Natasha Wong teaching the class on Fridays. We also welcome Mrs. Louise Schuster for the remainder of the year and thank her for her warm contributions this term. We wish Mrs. Prout well as she starts teaching 1P from Monday to Thursday, and welcome Mrs. Sally Milne, who will take over on Fridays. Lastly, we thank Mrs. Rebecca Rowe for her integral role as an ISTeacher in our upper school and wish her well in her future endeavours as she continues her inclusion work closer to home. We appreciate your understanding and support during these changes. We want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all our teaching staff, whose commitments and contributions are invaluable to our community, especially during this state-wide teacher shortage.
Year 6 Camp - That's a Wrap
We are thrilled to share with you the exciting adventures and valuable experiences our Year 6 students had during their recent camp at Tuchekoi. This annual event is a highlight for our Year 6 students, offering them a chance to learn, bond, and grow in a unique outdoor setting.
Throughout the week at Tuchekoi, our students participated in a wide range of activities designed to challenge them both physically and mentally. From navigating obstacle courses to mastering team-building exercises, each activity was aimed at fostering leadership skills, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for the natural environment.
We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our dedicated staff members who accompanied the students on this memorable journey. Mr. Jeff Hogan, Mrs. Shelley Johnstone, Ms. Cassie Love, Mr. Simon Gray, Mrs. Rebecca Rowe, Mrs. Michelle Durdin, and Mr. Glynn Priddle (a returning staff member) all generously gave their time and energy, sacrificing time away from their own families and commitments to ensure our students had the best possible experience.
The commitment and enthusiasm of our staff were evident throughout the camp. They not only supervised and guided the students through various activities but also provided mentorship and encouragement, helping each student to overcome challenges and embrace new opportunities for personal growth.
Highlights of the camp included thrilling adventures such as rock climbing and zip-lining, insightful lessons in bush survival skills, and memorable evenings spent around campfires under the stars. These experiences not only strengthened friendships but also built confidence and resilience in our Year 6 students as they prepare for the transition to secondary school.
As a school community, we are immensely proud of our Year 6 students for their positive attitudes, teamwork, and adventurous spirit throughout the camp. We believe these experiences will leave a lasting impression on their educational journey and contribute to their overall personal development.
Once again, a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated staff members for their unwavering support and commitment to providing our students with such enriching opportunities. We look forward to sharing more stories and memories from our upcoming Year 5 Camp hosted in Coolum.
Positive Behaviour for Learning - Term 2
As a PBL team we delighted to share with you that our focus on behaviour management this term has been yielding positive results across our school. We have been highly engaged in implementing strategies that promote positive behaviour, and we are seeing improvements in our students' conduct and interactions.
At Rochedale South, we are committed to engaging with your children every day through explicit teaching, acknowledging positive behaviours, and correcting behaviours that need improvement. This approach is central to creating a supportive and respectful learning environment for all students.
In particular, we have been placing a strong emphasis on social-emotional learning within the school context. This focus aims to equip our students with essential skills for managing emotions, building relationships, and making responsible decisions.
Furthermore, this holiday, you can continue to support these learnings by exploring the parent resources available on switch4schools.com.au. Simply log in and select 'browse without login' to access a wealth of home resources. These resources are designed to help you incorporate social-emotional learning into your household and support emotional management during challenging times.
I am excited to inform you that Cal and Pam will be attending the state-wide Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) conference in Cairns this week. This conference will provide valuable insights and strategies from experts and lighthouse schools across the state, which we look forward to sharing with you soon.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in promoting a positive school environment. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like further information.
First Nations - Connecting to Country and Elevating student Voice
Recently, our First Nations students, accompanied by our dedicated Eco Rangers, had the extraordinary opportunity to embark on a cultural journey led by our esteemed colleague, Ms. Jessica Skeen. Aunty Jess graciously guided our students through the rich landscapes of Mianjin country, exploring the significance of local mobs and their totems, prominently displayed along the Mangrove Walk.
During this memorable excursion, students immersed themselves in the artefacts that vividly depict the historical and profound connections shared with the river and its diverse inhabitants. This experience served as a poignant reminder of the deep cultural heritage and ongoing custodianship of our land.
Inspired by their learnings, our students were motivated to create representations of these totems, reflecting their newfound understanding and respect for our local environment and its traditional custodians.
For a glimpse into this enriching experience and to learn more about the Mangrove Walk, we invite you to visit the following link: Mangrove Walk - Must Do Brisbane.
We are immensely proud of our students for actively engaging in cultural learning and fostering a deeper appreciation for the land on which we gather. Such experiences not only enrich our curriculum but also instil values of respect, diversity, and environmental stewardship.

Celebrating our Instrumental Students - FanFare 2024
We are thrilled to share the fantastic achievements of our Band and Strings students and their dedicated teachers at the recent Fanfare event. Our school showcased remarkable talent and commitment, and we couldn't be prouder of everyone involved.
Firstly, a huge congratulations to our music teachers, Kate and Vanessa, for their outstanding first Fanfare! Their hard work and dedication shone brightly, with Vanessa earning a Gold award and Kate achieving Silver, in the very competative Division 2. These accomplishments are a testament to their exceptional teaching and the hours of preparation they invested in our students. Well done!
A special thank you goes to Katrina Warrener, whose positive encouragement and leadership have been instrumental in guiding our music program to new heights. Katrina also earned a Gold award, further highlighting the excellence of our school's music department. Your enthusiasm and support have made a significant impact, Katrina, and we are grateful for all you do.

We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs Antonellie for her invaluable assistance and support throughout the event. Your help ensured everything ran smoothly, and we couldn't have done it without you. Thank you for your dedication and hard work.
Lastly, a big thank you to everyone who helped behind the scenes, including those who washed the performing arts shirts. Your contributions, though often unseen, are deeply appreciated and play a vital role in our success.
As we look forward to the rest of the year, we are excited about the opportunities and achievements that lie ahead. Our music program is thriving, thanks to the incredible dedication of our teachers and the talent of our students.
Congratulations once again to everyone involved in Fanfare, and thank you for being such an amazing part of our community.
Community Connection
Celebrating Michael Thompson's Initiative: Realising Dreams on the Soccer Field
One year ago, Michael Thompson, a Year 1 student known for his persuasive skills honed under the guidance of Mrs. Golding, took it upon himself to champion a cause close to his heart: ensuring fair play for his fellow soccer-loving peers. Frustrated by ambiguous goals marked by crooked trees and shifting boundaries, Michael decided to take action.
Moved by Michael's heartfelt and well-constructed letter, Mrs. Stacey Wood, along with Mr. Charles, embarked on a mission to find a suitable solution. In the interim, temporary measures and initiatives were put in place to alleviate the frustration of the Year 1 and 2 boys who eagerly awaited a definitive resolution.
Today, we are thrilled to announce that thanks to Michael's enthusiasm and persistence, the ultimate solution has been realized. Real soccer goals have been constructed, marking a significant milestone for our school's soccer enthusiasts. The Year 1 and 2 boys are now delighting in the spoils of these new, tangible goalposts, which stand as a testament to Michael's initiative and the power of student advocacy.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Michael for his leadership and determination in bringing about positive change. His actions exemplify the values of initiative, leadership, and community spirit that we strive to instil in all our students at Rochedale South State School. Michael's story is a reminder that even the youngest members of our community have the power to make a meaningful impact.
As we celebrate this achievement, let us continue to encourage and support our students in advocating for positive change and creating a better environment for all.

Technology Classes are Off the Hook
We want to celebrate our Technology teacher, Mrs. Elisa Weston, who works tirelessly behind the scenes to provide engaging and thought-provoking learning experiences for our students. Her efforts have brought critical lessons in cyber safety, Bee bots coding, digital security, and the exciting world of robotics, including LEGO WeDo. Mrs. Weston also introduces our students to coding and problem-solving in virtual spaces through teamwork and collaboration using Minecraft. This coming term, Mrs. Weston will be attending the i-Educate conference, where she aims to enhance esports across our school community. Keep an eye out in the coming newsletters for more updates on these exciting developments.
CODE CAMP – Afterschool Program Commencing in Term 3

There has been lots of exciting learning occurring across our Prep-2 this term.
Our Prep students have been doing amazing reading and writing. Walking through the rooms, you can hear kids using their sounds all through the day. Our Prep students are always excited to talk about their learning and share what they have been doing!
In Year 1, students have been working hard in Maths, working on understanding bigger numbers and representing them in different ways.
Year 2 had a fabulous time on their excursion to the planetarium and botanical gardens. They will continue to use all of the information they have gathered in their Term 3 learning.

Athletics Day
Much fun was had on Athletics Day by all our Prep-2 students, parents and supporters. NCCD Data Collection 2024
Information Notice. The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) takes place every year. The NCCD is a collection that counts
- the number of school students receiving an adjustment or ‘help’ due to disability
- the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students.
Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability.
This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability.
The NCCD uses the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. All schools provide this information to education authorities. The data collection will be submitted by the 9th August, 2024.
The NCCD Guidelines are available on the NCCD Portal (www.nccd.edu.au/).
Medical Information and updating student Information
It is crucial student information is updated when there is a change. This includes medical information, living arrangements, address, contact details and emergency contacts. If your child requires medication whilst on school site, parents and cares can complete the required documents at our office. Staff can administer medication as prescribed by Medical Practitioners. Medication must be labelled with the students name and dosage requirements and Chemists/Pharmacists can do this.
Broken arm/broken leg- Health, Medication and Post Care Requirements for our students. Any student who requires medication to be administered at school, we request parents and carers to contact the school. If your child has an injury or medical condition, please advise the office immediately so our records can be updated. This ensures the appropriate adjustments, inclusive of a Medical Action Plan, can be created and implemented. At times, a student may require post care medical attention e.g. broken arm, moon boot or crutches, adjustments can be made during this time. Please advise the class teacher or the office staff.
We believe in the success and wellbeing for all in an inclusive and equitable environment.
Additional Supports and External Services on site WELCOME
External service providers are welcome on site with parent consent and Principal Approval. Our school adheres to all safety protocols and training, requiring documentation to be approved by the Principal prior to commencement on site. Please contact your child’s class teacher if you would like more information or download the documents from our school website. An External Support Agreement Consent Form.
NDIS Plans. Some students have a current NDIS plan. Parents are encouraged to share any reports with the school to ensure the supports being implemented are current and accurate for the student.
Supporting Students- NDIS. https://www.ndis.gov.au/understanding/what-ndis
NDIS can provide all people with disability with information and connections to services. Schools work collaboratively with external services to support students. As the health guidelines change, external services and parents can contact the school to discuss what the support can look like.

RACQ- Streets Ahead Program
This week, the RACQ Education Team visited our school and delivered the Streets Ahead program. Our students were taught valuable road safety lessons including how to cross the road safely, how to correctly wear a helmet and how they can be a safe and helpful passenger when travelling in a vehicle. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the program and gained practical strategies they can use when out in our community as pedestrians, bike/scooter riders and passengers.
If you would like to reinforce and extend your child’s learning of pedestrian, passenger and riding safety, you can access the RACQ Education website for resources and videos.

- Focussing on the effort your child has put into their tasks

- Acknowledge small successes to build confidence
- Set achievable goals together

This initiative is a priority across our school, showcasing a commitment to continuous improvement and professional growth. By integrating evidence-based strategies into our teaching, we ensure that our instruction is both effective and engaging for our students. These efforts are designed to enhance your child’s learning experience, fostering a love for English and building a strong foundation for their academic success.
FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER WENDY GROCOTT
Recently we sent out statements to our families and some of you have reached out for some clarification as to why. Let me tell you a little about statements as they can be confusing.
A statement of account is different to an invoice as it is an overall picture of what you owe rather than being for one particular item. It will usually list each of your children and which invoices are still open, how much the invoice was originally and how much is still outstanding. Sometimes they will even show a negative figure indicating that you have a credit on your account either from an over payment or a refund.
A statement acts as a reminder for an invoice you may have forgotten, or perhaps not even received, as sometimes can happen when we send out bulk ones. It can also be a great way to keep track of where you are up to with payment plans, to know how much you have left to go.
Remember that a Statement is a great way to track how your account is going, particularly if you are on a payment plan, it is not a new invoice.
How to read your Statement of Account
If you have an invoice to pay the amount will be shown as a positive figure as per the example below.
If you have a credit on your account either from an overpayment or a refund, for example, it will appear on your statement as a negative figure as per this example
If you do have a negative figure it means that you have money on your account that could be applied to any future invoices that are sent out. Please contact the Business Manager to have that credit applied to the next invoice or part thereof. Please do not pay this amount again. If you wish to have this credit amount returned to your bank account please talk to us and we can arrange that. Please keep in mind we can only return it to an account in the name of the person the statement is addressed to.
As always if you have any questions or concerns about your account please give me a call.

Interschool Sport
Well done to all Year 5 and 6 students who participated in the Semester 1 season of Interschool Sport for Rochedale South. Our school entered 4 soccer teams and 4 girls touch teams into Logan District Competitions and competed in matches every Friday, travelling by bus to fields.
A big congratulations to the Senior A Soccer Team who finished the season as undefeated Premiers. The Senior A's played Groves Christian College in the Grand Final on Friday 7th June at Usher Park and won 2-1. Two goals from our wonder striker Devere and some great saves by Goalkeeper Thomas were standouts in this Final. This is the first Rochedale South Soccer team to go back-to-back, having won the Premiership last year as Juniors as well. Congratulations also to the Junior A Soccer Team who finished 2nd on the ladder and played in a Grand Final against an undefeated Groves, but lost 2-1. The Juniors went up 1-0 early with a great goal by Max, but Groves were too good in the end. Well done also to the Junior B Soccer Team who also finished 2nd on the ladder and made a Grand Final against Harris Fields but went down 2-0. The Senior B Soccer Team also finished 3rd on the competition ladder, rounding out some respectable finishes all round for all of our RSSS soccer teams this year. A big thank you to Mr Hogan who coached our Junior B and Senior B Soccer teams this season, and to Mrs Podmore who helped manage teams, subs and first aid on Fridays.

Congratulations also to our Girls Touch Teams. This year saw many girls signing up to play touch. The four teams consisted of some very experienced and skilled players, particularly in the seniors, and some considerable talent in the juniors. It was reported by our Touch teachers that throughout the competition all teams managed solid performances with some wins and hard fought losses. The girls created a great vibe, especially on the bus, with rousing renditions of Taylor Swift songs. Altogether, it was a very enjoyable season with most of our teams finishing in the top four. Well done to our Junior and Senior A Teams who finished in 3rd place in the District. Mrs Owens and Mr Gray commend the teams on their excellent enthusiasm and effort. A big thank you to Mrs Owens and Mr Gray who coached these teams this season, training them mid-week, and refereeing and managing teams on Fridays.

Thanks to our Dads on the planning group who are ready to go again on the new date. Registrations for the campout will reopen next term, there will be a number of sites opened up to accommodate families who can attend on the new date.
Our school recently displayed our work, in the cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, at the South-East Region NAIDOC Showcase. Our school has been engaging in some significant work to elevate this priority through the Gift of Gallang program and connections with local artists, elders and our own First Nations Families. Come and check out the display when we share it next term for our school's NAIDOC celebrations.
THANK YOU

Dear Parents and Guardians
On behalf of the P&C we would like to thank you all for your patience with the Tuckshop repairs. It has taken longer than anyone anticipated and I can assure you, along with the whole school, Melissa and Alina are eagerly awaiting their return to the Tuckshop. In the meantime, our Tuckshop staff have been organising a Winter Menu for next term and expanding the menu to include some of your old favourites which will be added to Flexischools. Thank you again for everyone who has continued to support Tuckshop during Term 2, we look forward to serving you next Term.
P&C have also been working on some events for Term 3 so stay tuned for updates as we finalise the details and dates in the coming weeks. We will be looking for Volunteers to assist with these events. If you are interested in Volunteering for the P&C, please send an email including your full name, class your child is in (no names needed) and a phone number to:
We will contact you as event information is finalised. P&C are unable to hold events without Parents and Carers offering their assistance. The more volunteers we have the better the events and functions can be. We are building a Volunteer Database so even if you have already put your name down or helped at previous events, please send us an email so we know you are willing to continue or start helping in the future. It isn’t too late to help the P&C make your child’s primary school journey extra fun.
Thank you to the amazing Volunteers who have helped so far this year in the Tuckshop, Summer Disco, Fun Run, Picture Plates, Easter Raffle, Mother’s Day Stall, Sports Days and the upcoming Pie Drive Distribution and Under 8’s Day. Without your assistance, these events would not be possible.
Thank you to everyone who ordered Pies from the Gislers Pie Drive. Once again it was a massive hit with 79 orders equating to a massive 312 pies sold. Thank you to everyone who has participated and collected orders from yourself, family, workplace and neighbours it all adds up. We are proud to announce that we raised $1706 for our School.
The launch date of the Cookie Dough Fundraiser will be July 8th, the first day of Term 3. Information regarding registering and placing orders will be sent home with students so please keep an eye out for this information. Students will earn prizes for the number of Cookie Dough buckets sold.
Our next P&C meeting will be held at 7pm Monday 22nd July. We would love to see you there. Children are welcome to come to meetings. We do however ask if you are bringing your child along, can you please bring along something to keep them occupied. Hope to see you all there.
Have a safe and relaxing holiday and we will see you back ready for Semester 2.
Kind regards
P&C Team
